Jorge Masvidal said in an interview for UFC Tonight that he was only working on his striking and takedown defense, no jiu-jitsu at all. Is that a good idea? I know his gameplan is obviously to sprawl and brawl, but shouldn't you prepare for the worst case scenario in case Maia gets you down? Spending time working on survival/defensive jiu-jitsu seems like a good idea to me.

Gamebred is resigned to losing if the fight goes to the mat. lol

If the fight goes to the ground, Jorge is getting strangled.

I like his plan. His BJJ isn't going to improve enough to be able to deal with DM's experience. Keep it standing and beat the Brazilians ass.

Honestly wouldn't surprise me if Jorge caught Maia in a D'Arce choke or a guillotine like he did against Chiesa. We've been seeing high level grapplers like Charles Oliveira getting caught by those.

It wouldn't help in the slightest so go with what you know

Remember how well it worked out for Rumble/Bigfoot to practice wrestling before Cormier/Cain? Masvidal should stick to his bread and butter.

Probably banking on a quick KO before Maia can get a hold of him. Gamebred do have some soild takedown defense but then you have to remember he's dealing with Demian fucking Maia. One single leg, double leg or a single trip it's all it takes for him to drown your ass on the floor.

I enjoy Masvidal, but if that is his approach... my bet is on Maia

Erm it's probably the smartest thing he could do..?

Wouldn't matter if Jorge trained JJ for 3 years exclusively, He wouldn't be competitive.
When Maia fought Gunnar that really opened my eyes personally

More time spent stuffing the takedown is wayyyy more productive

Masvidal can train all the BJJ in his life and his next one and still won't be able to stop Maia from finishing him if the fight goes to the ground. It won't matter. All the jitz training in the world can't save Masvidal at this point.

Something like this can always happen of course but obviously Maia is a world apart even to grapplers like Chiesa and Oliveira. So I don't see it as very likely.

So I can see the logic if Masvidal thinks he is so outmatched on the ground(very reasonable thought) that he will just skip grappling prep and put all effort to avoiding the ground all together.

However I don't think he should abandon it completely. At least drill escapes and sub defense.

But I am also not a pro fighter or coach.

Smart. Train your wrestling, defensive grappling and standing back up.

Training JJ for Maia is a fool's errand and will only make you comfortable in a position that means certain death.

its BS, just trying to project confidence and that hes completely unconcerned about it, maybe get into MAias head a bit even. Which funnily only shows the opposite. Thats hes most likely scared sh+tless by it if he goes as far as to claim such nonsense.

Maybe hes smart enough to realize that, if Maia gets him down, doesnt matter how much jiu jitsu he's been practicing more of - Maia's gonna get him. He might as well get as good at staying on his feet as possible.

This is kind of my thought. working on his bjj for a camp isn't going to close the gap.

IMO that's where Ronda went wrong. She should have been working take downs.

It's not about beating Maia with jiu jitsu, it's about not being made into a fool if the fight goes to the ground. It's highly ill-advised to not prepare to defend the moves you know your opponent is going to use.
