2018 Heavies Awards Winners

Thank you to everyone who participated in any of our Heavies Awards threads from this past year. The polls have all closed, and here are our official results!

Winners

Poster of the Year - @bigwaverider

Snatching up 75 votes in the contest run by BC as if no one else was there, bigwaverider was voted Poster of the Year! His shoops are certainly the stuff of legend, which leads us to our next category...

Shooper of the Year - @bigwaverider

bigwaverider smashed a bottle over the competition's head in Shooper of the Year, racking up 87 votes with 66.9% of all voters casting one for him. What a year for the rider, and on top of that, he became a mod in November! How about that!

Breakout Fighter of the Year - Israel Adesanya

082_Israel_Adesanya_vs_Brad_Tavares.0.jpg

Signing with the UFC in 2018 and bursting out of the gates with four wins including a few knockouts and some brilliant performances all around, the undefeated Adesanya showed it was never even close. The next highest voted fighter received over 250 votes fewer than Adesanya. That's how you make a splash.

Knockout of the Year - Yair Rodriguez's R5 4:59 Elbow KO of Chan Sung Jung

There was never really much doubt that this would win the Knockout of the Year. It's not just Knockout of the Year, it very well may be Knockout of the Decade. Put up some other incredible knockouts next to it like Ngannou's Mortal Kombat-esque uppercut of Overeem and I think I'd still pick the Yair elbow. It was truly one-of-a-kind.

Submission of the Year - Ryan Hall's R1 2:46 Kneebar of BJ Penn

giphy.gif

Coming into their bout, BJ Penn had never been submitted in his career, and think of some of the names he has faced over the years. And yet, Ryan Hall pulled it off with an incredibly risky Imanari Roll to snag the kneebar and shock the world!

Story of the Year - UFC 229 Post-Fight Brawl

bdf00146699c06ac16e54aaa3269513b

A normally stoic fighter, Khabib Nurmagomedov was so agitated after submitting Conor McGregor with a neck crank at UFC 229 that he jumped out of the cage to attack one of McGregor's cornermen. They are both still suspended pending upcoming hearings, so who knows what will come of it. Be that as it may, it was a shocking conclusion to the biggest PPV event in UFC history, and also...

Event of the Year - UFC 229

DlPHY7CU0AALejX.jpg

Did the post-fight brawl put it over the top, or was it the incredible action from Lewis/Volkov, Ferguson/Pettis and Nurmagomedov/McGregor that really sealed the deal? Either way, it was one of the easiest picks for voters, with almost 70% of you saying this was the event of the year. It'd be hard to argue otherwise.

Fight of the Year - Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero 2

Of all the categories, this was probably the closest. There were plenty of worthy contenders, but with 29.1% of the vote, Whittaker vs. Romero 2 at UFC 225 took the cake as your Fight of the Year!

Fighter of the Year - Daniel Cormier

HMkyozo.jpg

The champ-champ is here, and he already defended both belts including his LHW strap in January 2018 before winning the HW belt in July, turning around and defending that one in November on short notice. 3-0 with three knockouts in title fights each within two rounds makes Daniel Cormier our definitive Fighter of the Year.

2018 Shonuf Award - @Jackonfire

239202.jpg

Show me a guy that does more work than Jackonfire for this forum and I'll have to argue that point. King of the PBP threads, he's everywhere and is always there when you need him. A great mod, and even more importantly, a great guy. Well done!

Thanks for voting, everyone!

Where am I for "shit-poster of the year"?

Pfffft. Sherdog is dead confirmed.

<CanYouSeeMeNow>

Just gonna congratulate myself for a double runner up (aka 2x loser) of breakthrough poster of the year, and shooper of the year... Queue tumbleweeds...

I'd like to thank Picsart, and the mods for letting me get away with murder last year...

Well done to my dudes @bigwaverider and @Jackonfire - it's been a vintage sherdog year.

Thanks for making this thread. Very thorough and lots of hard work that will go un-thanked. But I appreciate it.
