As a huge GSP fan, I have to agree. Even Drysdale said GSP only had an average aptitude for straight BJJ, and had most of his BJJ success using his ridiculous athleticism.

He certainly would have more sub wins if he was hugely gifted in BJJ. He is just the perfect balance of a gifted athlete, discipline, and a freakish gift to mix up his striking and wrestling. Still a GOAT, even if his BJJ isn't the elite of the elite.

Where does this argument that GSP was much better than Usman comes from?

Let’s compare what we know.

Usman is bigger and probably even stronger than GSP.

Usman’s wrestling is on par or better than GSP’s.

Usman has never shown signs of slowing down and fights with a higher output, so most likely his stamina is even better than GSP’s.

Usman has never been finished in UFC, GSP has been submitted and tapped to strikes.

Is GSP’s striking better than Usman’s? Hard to tell. GSP looked as a elite striker when he fought grapplers, and as a elite wrestler when he fought strikers. He didn’t look too impressive against well rounded guys like Hendricks or BJ. He also got schooled on the feet by Serra. His striking was also quite basic just sitting behind the jab.

I’m not saying Usman is way better than GSP, but it’s also ridiculous to say that GSP was much better than him. They never fought and have zero common opponents so it’s actually hard to compare them. Only thing that is for sure, he have seen GSP fall, were yet to see Usman fall
