UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Volkov

He weighed in at 265 against Harris and was visibly bigger.

Obviously that fight didn't make it out of the second, but he seemed to have more pep on his shots.

I think Overeem's chin issues are a tad bit overblown, but over the course of a five round fight against Volkov, the more I think about it, the more he should be able to put away Overeem.

He didn't gas versus Blaydes despite being taken down 14 times, so I highly doubt a little muscle will taint his cardio much -- especially against someone like Overeem who doesn't push a high pace.

i wonder what overeem's game plan is here? he has the better ground game, especially if he gets top control its basically over. maybe low kicks + trips during the clinch?
Its also a bit concerning that overeem has said he just wants a shot at the belt then retire. so if he doesnt win this then hes already made a decision to most likely retire. this is his last run at a title shot. Im leaning on an overeem win here. the ml is +150

I imagine he will take a grappling heavy approach. Alistar still trains at Elevation Fight Team with Blaydes the last man to beat Volkov. I think he will be taking alot of influence from that fight. I'm not sure if he will have the same level of success holding Volkov down though.

Why would it be over on the ground. I think he can get up once Reem takes him down if he does.

Strongly disagree that if Overeem gets him down once it's all over.

Werdum took him down repeatedly and couldn't do anything with the TDs, and his top control/BJJ is superior to Reem'a. Blaydes GnP and top control >>> Overeem's as well, so if Blaydes couldn't do fuck all for damage from the top with 14 takedowns, what makes you think Overeem will pose problems?

We've seen Overeem take gassed opponents down that have dogshit ground games, but Volkov doesn't really gas.

If Overeem comes out trying to replicate what Blaydes did, 1) he wont be able to and 2) he'll gas himself out.

I was on Overeem initially, but the more I think about it, this is an awful matchup for him.

A tall striker with a good chin and insane reach that hits hard and often and doesn't gas.

The o2.5 @ +135 will probably be my play, but I'll be sweating it because it's not going to take much for Volkov to finish Overeem.

I think Overeem provides different threats than blaydes and werdum. Blaydes suffocates you with wrestling, werdum has great bjj but physically weak. i think Overeem can finish volkov on the ground.

You mentioned "insane reach". But they have the same reach..... +/- 1in since tapology has volkov as 81in but other sources say both are 80in. I uno where you got the "insane" reach from?

I guess I just forgot how long Overeem's reach is. 80 inches? Damn.

Volkov's legs are surely longer, which will allow him to kick from range.

I like Overeem, and I bet him against Harris and Sakai. But I just think this is a god awful matchup for him.

Oh don't get me wrong. On paper it looks like volkov will fuckin KO overeem standing. I am just hoping and praying overeem will use all that experience + training with blaydes at elevation to implement a clinch and takedown plan to GnP volkov. I think he can do it.

But a takedown game will gass him too much imo. He cant land takedown after takedown like blaydes did. I think betting Volkov life after the 1st round is the play here. Overeem will most likely win the 1st round, after that it remains to be seen if he doesn't gass.

Dont think Volkov is as bad on the ground as you think. He hung with Werdum in the early goings

How did he hang with Werdum? He got taken down and controlled for 2 rounds, he just survived

Yes but he never takes a lot of damage on the ground. I personally don't think Overeem will land heavy ground and pound vs Volkov.

So many wide lines on this card. Like a lot of dogs

Jerome Rivera opens at +230 against ode Osbourne.

think I’m on all dogs except Diego. I even lean reneau at these prices, not sure I play her though.

I dunno about that, Blaydes was struggling to hold him down and Overeem struggled to do much of consequence to Bigi Boy when he had him on his back.

Really like Rivera at that price, Ode is not much of a wrestler and Rivera should have a significant grappling advantage.
Think this is a 50/50 type of fight.

Ode wrestled in high school and he has some subs. He’s not a slouch on the ground but he definitely shouldn’t be nearly -300. That’s crazy.

I would agree should be much closer to evens

I just watched his last 2 fights and he got taken down in both of those.
He did stuff a couple of takedowna against a rocked Villarreal but he did let him get in on his hips several times.
He Should have an advantage striking.

Rivera is so weak. I doubt he will get Osbourne to the ground easily. And on the feet he is just terrible. Imo he looked really bad vs fake Fig.
