Law Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act: Signed into law 11/15/21

Lol wot?!?!

That's being willfully ignorant on their part.

Biden was being generous enough to give the GOP a bill they can sign off on. Everyone knows the Progressive's won't sign off on this unless they get the bigger bill in reconciliation.

Why is that willfully ignorant? This is making it an all or nothing proposition and the bipartisan deal actually was going to possibly help them craft something in reconciliation that Manchin could get on board with. It makes it more complicated trying to pass it all there.

I think I talked to @Jack V Savage about this a few months back where farther left politicians sometimes shoot themselves in the foot forcing things into all or nothing propositions that just end up with nothing. It’s possible something clean is crafted in recon but the ultimatum definitely changed the setting.

The progressives have said they won't vote for this without reconciliation.

Did you think they were bluffing?

I think there will be a bigger bill in reconciliation but it definitely won't be as big as a lot of progressives would like.

I said Biden and Pelosi who I assume were pressured to make that ultimatum from those on the left. I wasn’t going to be surprised if Bernie voted for the rec and not the bipartisan deal. That isn’t what’s surprising. It makes it far more likely both deals don’t pass doing that ultimatum compared to if they didn’t. I can’t figure out if it was to get farther left people to vote on it with assurances but that still doesn’t make sense. Again, it’s become an all or nothing proposition now and this entire process has seemed pointless. Unless Biden is doing 4D chess, this just all seems like a flop. I almost think he’d still sign if only one deal reached his desk. Can’t say Pelosi would cave on the ultimatum though. A lot could change though if one passes and the other doesn’t.

Yea it won’t be the 6T. There hasn’t been a lot of talk on it at least in the news yet. The other thing is if this is a two track system, does the reconciliation bill also include the infrastructure spending or tables it because of the bipartisan bill? You almost have to have the bipartisan bill vote first to determine that.

Biden looks to be walking back or clarifying his comments now, saying the bills don't have to be together for him to sign. Still seems like the hold up could come from the house however if Pelosi's comment still stands.

'Certainly not my intent': Biden walks back 'tandem' infrastructure bill remarks

Politico
After enraging Republicans and putting his own bipartisan deal in jeopardy, President Joe Biden issued a lengthy statement on Saturday to walk back comments linking an infrastructure deal to a Democrat-only plan.

Biden infuriated Republican negotiators on Thursday after he said he would refuse to sign the infrastructure package until he was sent a Democrat-only spending package, which is expected to include a litany of items the GOP has long rejected.

“That statement understandably upset some Republicans, who do not see the two plans as linked; they are hoping to defeat my Families Plan — and do not want their support for the infrastructure plan to be seen as aiding passage of the Families Plan,” Biden said in the statement. “My comments also created the impression that I was issuing a veto threat on the very plan I had just agreed to, which was certainly not my intent.”

The statement went on to say, “So to be clear: our bipartisan agreement does not preclude Republicans from attempting to defeat my Families Plan; likewise, they should have no objections to my devoted efforts to pass that Families Plan and other proposals in tandem. We will let the American people — and the Congress — decide.”

Dems screw this up they can kiss my ass.

Republicans screw this up they can kiss my ass.

But Biden is tying this package to a separate package that includes the line items he "compromised" on - this all but negates the purpose of the bi-partisan spirit. I'm not even sure what the intention is here. Can someone explain?

Seems to be pushback on Manchin. Telling him he'll get his bipartisan compromise if he agrees to vote for the other stuff through reconciliation.

He said he will pursue the deal with vigor on its own. The dems should get behind their grandpa and do what he directs.

Of course. That’s what every originally thought was happening. Schumer mentioned there two track plan awhile back. What threw everyone off was saying he wouldn’t sign the bipartisan deal if the reconciliation bill also didn’t reach his desk. Now he’s walked that back because it makes absolutely no sense to really have a two track plan if it’s all or nothing for either deal. I think they were just trying to pressure moderate Dems on the reconciliation bill but all I think it did was piss them off and any republicans working on the bill.

Him walking this back doesn’t mean he’s against the reconciliation. Just means he agrees that bill is its own thing that will require negotiations with democrats to get all 50 votes and if they somehow fail, it isn’t the bipartisan bills fault that happened.

More than Manchin too I would say. I’m wondering how far apart the most left senator is from the most moderate Democrat. At face value it seems anywhere from 600B to 6T is terms of dollars but there’s a lot of elements that will make the reconciliation trickier. You are talking tax policy, education, elderly / child care, green energy initiatives, etc. There’s a lot to get stuck up on. Splitting the bills both did and didn’t benefit negotiations from that standpoint because getting this through with 60 votes saves some hurdles in reconciliation.

Haven’t done a post about it yet but it looks like some of the pay fors are bs. The main one is they give 40B for enhanced IRS enforcement and project it will lead to 100B in additional collections while the IRS itself believes 40B would lead to 60B in additional collections. I didn’t look into most of the other pieces yet but I think those would be harder to determine if they are accounting gimmicks or really offsets/ pay fors.

What an absolutely bizarre display today by Biden. First he supports the bipartisan deal then 30 mins later he won’t sign it Then he rambles on about how it’s businesses own fault that the govt is paying their employees not to work. The guy is an embarrassment.

He’s committed to the bill. It’s on Congress now to do what’s right.

They really need to pass the bill. A building just collapsed because of infrastructure issues. There’s no reason to stall this.

I wish there were a way to let them know we want the damn bill passed

Okay man, let’s not over play that building story on this. Connecting it is a little eh. That isn’t to downplay the importance of anything passed, I just don’t think it’s to related to this.

100% that bill wouldn't have saved that building. No matter when it was passed.

But it could save potential future buildings and bridges. And the failure points to the consequences of not addressing infrastructure problems.

it’s an important issue that has grave consequences if left untouched. Sooner is better than later, and possible success is better than future gambling.
