That's the reason for this interim belt. There is always a chance that he knocks out Francis & they don't wanna lose Francis as their HW champion. A HW champion someone like Lewis is just awful for visual. That's how UFC protects Ngannou while sending Gane to take care of him.

Besides a Fight between Ngannou & Gane is more interesting; it has a narrative. With this fight UFC can have a huge opening in France.

This. They actually like Black Beast, he gets media hype and has a fan base. Reason why he keeps getting big fights. I think they just want to make a champion vs champion fight to sell more when either BB or Gane challenge Ngannou. Plus the negotiations with pay probably factors in as well so they are just leveraging having another champion (interim) for leverage for future negotiations. Seems like a lot is going on in HW division behind the scenes and a lot of chess moves are being made.

Nah, I don’t think so. Lewis is a power puncher with personality that already has a decent sized fan base. No reason for the UFC to be against him and it’s clear they’re not given how many prominent spots he’s been in.

It’s a good theory but I’ve got another one. The UFC didn’t like Francis comments about fighter pay, just like they didn’t like Jones, and now they are fucking him over to set an example for other fighters.

Unless you can think of another time they setup an interim belt 3 months after a guy became champ who was willing to fight less than 6 months later. Yeah it’s never happened because it doesn’t make any fucking sense and is just a power ploy.
