Public Enemy vs NWA

Not bad. What is recording setup like?
I need to get a new microphone. I was using a Snowball mic that I had, but it's old and really muffled. Right now my smart phone records better, but it crackles sometimes.

I use a Tascam DR40 for quick jobs and it works pretty well with the onboard mics. What DAW are you using?

I just use Audacity as a quick and easy way to record.

They do, but the NWA guys had it individually, and were able to go off on their own and produce better music, better careers, and more accolades than Public Enemy did as a group.

I suppose Public Enemy was the better group in that sense, since they've stayed together, but NWA had the better individual rappers comprising their group and are more well known. At least Dre, Cube, and Eazy. Ren is way underrated though, imo, and that's sad, bc he was the second best rhyme in that group, and the gap between him and Eazy/Dre is huge.
Ren is way underrated.

NWA bowed down to money issues back then. Kinda like the Geto Boys.

That is why Public Enemy is the better group.

Was never really exposed to Public Enemy. Have an older brother and was exposed to NWA when I was 12 or 13 and loved it. Used to bump that shit and make the house's windows rattle.

Public Enemy.

Their catalog and message still hold up today. Once Ice Cube left N.W.A., they just didn't have the raw power they once held.

This gem made with Stephen Stills from Crosby, Stills, and Nash is still amazing after all these years.

"God takes care of old folks and fools, while the Devil takes care of makin' all the rules."

The message of Public Enemy is great, still relevant today, good lyrics, etc. ... but the music is awful. They seem to be universally agreed upon as overrated. I've never seen anyone try to defend their popularity. Even seen them live at a festival, overrated for sure.

So obviously NWA > Public Enemy.

I just gotta say, Wu-Tang Clan is far better than both.

;)
True. Wu-Tang Clan ain't nuthin to fuck wit, but you have to admit that only their 1st tree albums would be considered great (the 1st two are absolute top 5 classics). They took a precipitous drop off after The W. Iron Flag had a few decent songs, but that was it. U-God said it right. The songs after Wu-Tang Forever weren't as hard hitting. RZA took them in a direction that I didn't like.

Here's my hierarchy:

Beastie Boys > Wu > NWA > Tribe > Geto Boys > Public Enemy

Longevity puts the Beastie Boys over da Wu, but it's close. Also, I don't take into consideration solo joints, but you could make a case, since Liquid Swords and Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... were pretty much Wu joints which happened to star one or two main rappers.

I like both but NWA is in my personal conversation for GOAT rap group of all time where I’d put PE on the tier below that. I just like all of NWA’s albums (there aren’t many tho) and feel they were probably more influential tho I can see that being argued.

MC wise it’s NWA, Chuck D is a legend but he’s really all they have. As for beats.. Terminator X was badass in that time period but I actually don’t think everything I used to like by them holds up the way some of NWA’s stuff does for me.. plus Yella and Dre as a team are hard to beat, and Dre alone can stand with anyone historically in hip hop sound production wise and beat production wise.

NWA takes this imo with no shame in PE’s direction, they’re great too. They just fall I bit short here.

NWA had music that I enjoyed listening to more, Public Enemy had the ability to convey a message without constant glorification of gang life and everything that goes with it.

I would say the same. Both started with classics and eventually got worse, but would give the edge to Public Enemy since they have more good quality albums.

8 Diagrams had some good stuff on it. Probably my second favorite album of theirs, tbh.
