International China Pulls Ahead of US in Quantum Computing Race

There is also the problem of their best best scientists defecting to the United States. For some reason, this backwater country still attracts the best of the best from all over the world.

China is not the soviet union.

Where are you getting this idea that Chinese scientists are 'defecting' to the West. This is the language of the cold war and presupposes that China cannot retain its own talent because it either can't pay them or provide them with a good quality of life. Neither of which are true.

This is wishful thinking.

China is not like the soviet union. It is the nearest thing to a peer competitor that the US has ever faced. It has an economy that is catching up and will overtake the US - something that's never happened before.

I do think the US is doing its best to strangle China in the cot, but I don't think it'll succeed. Once China becomes the biggest economy it will have allies because of its trading relationships, and it'll be the better option i.e. it could conceivably go with China instead of the US. Once we reach that inflection point we'll see a bifurcated world. I think now is only the start. At the moment the US still holds many advantages over China. But once China makes a few key breakthroughs i.e. develops its own capital markets and financial system that's not reliant on the dollar, breaks the semiconductor bottleneck and a few other things, it will be able to act with much greater independence. We're already seeing that trend with China discouraging Chinese firms listing in the US, the introduction of their own digital currency and new financial messaging system, and their Manhattan project like funding of the semiconductor supply chain. It's all coming.

Sure we faced it before. imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and USSR were all in same position China is in now. Up and coming peer competitors with USA on all fronts. Needless to say, we went to great lengths to crush them all and are 4 and 0. We'll be 5-0 soon. USA does not accept peer competitors period. What do you think this whole Asia shift Obama started is all about? We are ramping and ramping whole world up for the enviable confrontation.

For thinking inside the beltway check out Mearsheimer's: tragedy of great power politics book or symposiums on youtube. He advises presidents and views are broadly shared in the DC consensus.

Chinese top official defected to US, gave Biden administration info about Wuhan lab, report suggests

We'll be 5-0 soon.

Said every empire.

Barring a war how do you stop China from reaching their potential? By potential I'm just talking about natural economic growth that will allow them to surpass the US.

Peer competitors don't ask for permission to overtake the incumbent. They just do it. Just like how the US overtook the UK. There comes a point when it becomes impossible to stop.

Here is how it plays out. Once Putin is gone we make friends with Russia again and cut off China's fuel and much IP. As I said earlier we'll get our allies which is basically whole world to boycott china on charges of genocide, virus making, market manipulation, etc, so they are alone without resources or income which will cause a revolution within since the ppl tasted the "good life" a bit then will be thrown back into the cultural revolution/stone age times and revolt.

Only reason it hasnt happened yet is we are transferring our manufacturing assets to India, veitnam etc and Putin is a big problem child.

This is a false assumption and should be updated. I wouldn't take it to the bank.

If Americans think that the Chinese can't innovate you're in for a rude surprise.

Other than some military applications, which I think the US will retain an extended advantage in (from a qualitative pov), everything else in the public domain is just a matter of engineering and resource. China has the money and the political will to overcome any supply chain restrictions - which is why we're seeing China throwing everything at semiconductors. By the by, I thought that was a monumentally stupid trade policy. US basically traded its strategic semiconductor industry to try and tank Huawei. Maybe the US values network control and standards over having control over semi-conductors. I don't know.

What major technological breakthrough has come out of China? Filing more patents does not mean they are more advanced. The impact of a patent matters. Here in the US we get people filing patents for all sorts of widgets , but they aren't what one would call great inventions. When Dean Kamen revealed the Segway on Jay Leno's show as a revolutionary invention, Jay was underwhelmed; he was expecting something far more substantial.

China is not at the cutting edge of semi conductor technology, which is why they were struggling after Trump imposed restrictions on US technology and pressured the Dutch to not sell their cutting edge semi conductor manufacturing technology.

China can and does steal a lot of Western and Japanese technology, but stealing only gets you soo far. Even though they have reversed engineered Russian jet engines, they have still had trouble matching the Russian made engines.

China is effectively a technological satellite state of the West.
It has shown little ability to innovate, only renovate what it has been taught.
They owe almost their entire modern development to Western knowledge.

That said, fair play to them advancing some of these fields.
When we feel like showing them something new, we will. Until then they can keep renovating on some of our technology.

Lol at them being smarter. The copy depends on the original, they and we all know this.

America also owes alot to them since the Chinese developed gun powder.

The first post is quite instructive as to where they're headed.

You seem obsessed with just a few technologies where China is lacking but ignore that they're at the forefront of ai, quantum computing, drones, renewables, high speed rail, 5g, iot etc

Im pretty sure they'll overcome the semiconductor bottleneck at some point. It's just a matter of time and resource.

they will probably catch up to our navy and airforce in technology the entire city of Shenzhen with its 12.5 million people is basically their silicon valley but for cheaper and they can get things done faster than in the u.s.

Recently in similar situation the Chinese admitted they are racing to catch the US an Russia space programs. What US scientists believe is the Chinese even devoting 10's of billions to research in all areas creating entrepreneurial creativity that countries like US is not happening.

Structure learning and lack of creative activities such as painting an creative writing an such hurts Chinese out of box thinking. Being able to use creativity is something lacking and Chinese are good at mimicking US technology but little shown in bringing new ideas to market. Something tells me the claims need independent oversight.

But that's a side topic. To me, the real story is how much China is funding this from the top down. Anyone have any idea how this compares with our National Quantum Initiative Act?

Tsk, Tsk.

The National Quantum Initiative Act is less than $1 billion. There is only $625 million set to be dispersed by the DOE over the next five years.

Just looking at this thread, I see:

China is spending billions of quantum computing, updating their military by leaps and bounds, and trying to make up for lost time in Space.

Are they going to bankrupt themselves like the Soviet Union did?

It’s actually very true. Getting into higher positions are tough for the average Chinese because the CCP treats them as expendable. They aren’t paid top tier at all. You seem pretty clueless.

The Chinese economy is entirely built on slave labor, fake numbers, industrial espionage, fraudulent science papers, and good PR (bribing and honeytrapping Western politicians such as Swalgay and Faucringe)

Chinese science, goods, and labor are all of horrendous cheap quality and they have no ability to pull ahead since they do not have the ability to innovate or produce quality anything. The only innovative thing that they do is find better ways to cheat and lie.

Just check out their music industry lmao

All their so called top students from so called top Unis like Tsinghua are frauds that cheated and bribed their way into the top. The entire educational system of China encourages their students to cheat and lie their way into jobs and positions. Every single Chinese student cheats on their exams.

This is pretty spot on. Also, they pay is abysmal because they think getting into these positions is a privilege and you can be replaced easily. China is strong but let’s not overrate them.

I get that the published research puts them ahead but if Google did 53 qubits in 2019 and China did 56 in 2021, are they really ahead? Doesn't that presuppose that Google hasn't improved since 2019? Rather than they've improved but haven't published since then.

You'd better check outside your window for any vans sporting kanjis roughly translated "you will have happy pizza"
