Songs about chain gangs, prisons, jail

When the Aliens arrive and they want to hear what our music sounds like, Folsom Prison Blues Johnny Cash.

There must be a 1000 old blues songs singing about jail and prison, going to stay away from those with this one exception. The Grateful Dead do a great cover, and nowhere in the song is Viola Lee mentioned. Taught myself the harmonica trying to mimic Noah Lewis.

Love those Harry Smith recordings. Haven't heard the revisited versions, will check it out. Thank you.

He woke a lot of music lovers up to some stuff they didn't know existed. Another world of music.

Give James Alley Rabbit Brown, Cairo Henry Spauldings and Last Kind Words by Geechie Wiley a listen. Combined those three had less than a dozen records.

That was recorded in prison.

There is a CD out there featuring that cat, Otis Webster, Hogman Maxey and a few other convicts at Angola Prison. All of them could have made a living in music.
