Nintendo The METROIDVANIA Thread

I’ve been jamming on this for the past few hours.

The good things first. The game is beautiful, has a solid soundtrack and the levels are put together really well. I’m a big fan of this art style. It reminds me of old cab side scrollers. There’s room for plenty of upgrades and fighting styles and the interface is easy to follow.

The bad: The game is difficult. Not because of any difficulty platforming but because the balance is wayyy off. Enemies hit like a truck while your own upgrades take forever to get. The screen is zoomed while loading 7-8 enemies on the screen. At the same time flying enemies fire from areas that are only reached through certain platforming. The game needs tp be balanced better and the $100 health potion is just too much.

Picked up Foregone on Steam sale for $5. A lot more linear than I was looking for in a Metroidvania, but still a solid platformer. Lots of loot, upgrades, and skill trees, which totally hooks me.

In theory I should love Metroidvanias. I play the hell out of every Metroid game. I love Castlevania games-- I, II, III and IV.

But I tried Hollow Knight. Just don't like it.
Tried Bloodstained. Couldn't get into it.
Tried Blasphemous. Same deal.

For a while I was into Dead Cells but after difficulty level 2 I believe it just lost its charm. Am I the problem?

Looks cool. I like the style of it. I’m my PC wasn’t in the same room my work station is in I would probably play more PC games but after work I just want to walk away. One day I hope a good TV to PC link comes out. They have some but none that I’ve found are any good.

That said, here is a cool one on Kickstarter.

This one is a little more ridiculous but I’d still pick it up.

It's probably just one of those things where you want to like Metroidvanias but when you boot them up you just don't enjoy them.

I absolutely love the art style, the animations, the voice acting, the gameplay loop, and punishing difficulty of Darkest Dungeon when i look at it, but when i actually try playing it i feel nothing at all. I try to convince myself that at some point it'll click and i'll be addicted, but hours later i'm just bored.

I can't explain why either. When i look at the game i want to play it, and i love other turn based games like it, but i just don't enjoy it for whatever reason. It's a shame really.

Can’t wait for another Castlevania game, but as I’m going through elden ring I can’t help but wonder what a Castlevania game In this style would be like.

You're not alone...

I did like Bloodstained, but I just cant get into Hollow Night

Never tried Blasphemous.. I dunno, the art and gore seems a bit over the top.

FWIW I love Dread and that Strider reboot from a few years ago.

I can understand this. The game is primarily focused around deck building and if you’re not into that you probably won’t have a lot of fun. Not to mention, the game is difficult. I got fairly far before I wanted something with more action. I loved it and will go back in a while.

@WhiteMousse I’ve beaten HK and Blasphemous but have never played bloodstained. Wish I could tell you what it could be but both of those games are phenomenal and well loved by the MV community. Maybe try coming back to them at some point.

I’m waiting for Ender Lilly’s to go on sale. That seems to have cool mechanics for a MV.

That's the problem though, i don't mind the difficulty and that the characters have negative traits... i have no idea why i don't like it, i've never been able to pin down the reason. It's just one of those things i can't do anything about.

Yea, wish I could help you there. Maybe check out a deep dive on the mechanics and see if that'll motivate you. The game is much deeper that I ever expected and there are some good breakdowns on synergies. DD 2 is much different from what it looks like.

Devs will be dropping a patch for this game evening out the balance issues plus many other things. Hardly ever do I need to go to easy mode but in this game forced my hand and even then I was dying too much. They're also fixing the sensitivity of the controls on console. To save you have to hold up at a dragon sword in the ground and it brings up the save menu. Problem is, they put the save spots right next to ledges so when you're done saving your first instinct is to push up and jump. Holding up and hitting X saves the game. So this causes this dumb feedback loop that has you continually saving when you try to leave the save area. Further, up is used to go through hidden doors. Even the slightest hit of up will have you stuck in a revolving door. It's maddening.

That said, the second level has been great fun. It's really an exploratory game so far. Lots of little nooks and crannies. The lack of map markers sucks because the maps are fairly large and they have two sections. Hard to keep track of without them.

Bloodstained Curse of The Moon 2 was amazing

Supraland is currently free on Epic games. It's an excellent Metroidvania that has most likely gone under everyone's radar

Try Salt and Sanctuary. If you can't get into that, it might be you. Salt and Sacrifice, the sequel, I haven't been feeling near as much so don't start with that one.

I thought I had posted in here already but I guess not. I’ve been playing the absolute crap out of Rogue Legacy 2. Anyone who likes this genre needs to check it out
