Television ANDOR (Dragonlord's Recommendation: One of the Best TV Shows of 2022, post #439)

Agreed, and IMO the Disney+ series are succeeding in building onto what Rogue One started. People have been focused on their main plotlines, but some of the best things to come out of the Mandalorian, BOBF, OWK and now Andor, was universe lore like seeing how Tuskens live, guys like Kuiil who were enslaved by the Empire, normal spaceport logistics at work, regular working joes on Ferrix, inside an industrial conglomerate like Preox-Morlana, etc. All of this, if done well, enhances the movies because they fill in gaps that weren't fleshed out before.

The sequel films threw in loads of references to the originals but really the setting never felt much like them to me(besides maybe the Ewoks), lacking in scale, depth and generally rather cartoonish fantasy. Edwards on the other hand did seem to have a good idea of what an updated SW should look like making it much more down to earth with the kind of "retro future" industrial tech to it.

I do think thats been a massive benefit to the Disney+ series as if you get the setting/production right then it potentially makes it much easier to gloss over flaws in the writing, Obi Wan for example was rather patchy I felt but could always depend on the setting when it wasnt really doing much else along with McGregor's performance.

More poor quality trash from Disney to milk and disgrace Star Wars. Too busy focused on their crybaby liberal agenda to make anything George & the fans deserve.

watched the first episode, seemed ok.
the next two i was bored.
if the next episode is just as boring, i'm not watching it anymore.

i fell asleep watching episode 2. It automatically played episode 3 afterwards, I woke up and went to sleep again. This show cures insomnia.

Rogue One got it right because it portrayed a lot of characters as shades of gray - a lot of "good" characters had mean or bad tendencies, and that's much closer to real life. In the (hilarious) Double Toasted review, the dude is like "The thing about Cassian Andor's ruthlessness is, he won't just shoot a friend. He won't just shoot a CRIPPLED friend. He'll shoot a crippled friend in the BACK, while telling him everything's going to be OK." Then they show the Rogue One clip of him doing exactly that LMAO. Nuanced characters, even seemingly unimportant ones, are part of a great background setting.

Agree with the sets being very strong on Obi Wan Kenobi despite some spotty performances and questionable writing. Ewan carried that series although the beautiful sets made it possible.

I wouldnt say you automatically need to do that with SW but it obviously helps if your show/film is a lenghty character focused story.

A big factor as well for me is that Edwards was a genuine Starwars fanboy, just the right age to be part of that generation who grew up watching it obsessively in the 80's and obviously a director with a lot of know how when it comes to design work/cinematography/CGI. I'm sure there are plenty of people ar Lucasfilm who are the same way who had probably been imgining making a film in the world of the originals for decades but never had a chance.

Someone like Abrams claimed to be a SW fan but I just didnt see it on screen, SW to him was IMHO just more nostalgia fodder to fit into pretty much the same films he'd already been making and I think that style is already dating very badly.

I also found myself bored after the first episode. My wife was bored. I hope it gets better and recaptures how I felt after episode 1. If not, I feel I'll end up having the same feeling about this like I did with Rogue One. Complete apathy.

or Star Bores.

PS still better than TLJ @Myrddin Wild
You only got bored because your wife didn't like it & you're a slave to following treads... I'd love to hear your unbiased response outside of exterior influences if that even exists.

You're outing yourself by saying you didn't like Rogue One. Teh fook? o_O

Hearing good things about this show. Might have to check it out.

I'm thinking this Andor actor should be Metal Gear Solid Snake instead of Poe Dameron.

I appreciate what the show is doing and it shows great potential but the first three episodes could have been condensed into two episodes.

Haven't watched the fourth episode but hope that it's better paced.

Ep 4 was too dull. Weird seeing the old guy with disguise and bling bling and always smiling.

Damn this is like Star Wars for grown ups. And Skarsgard knocking it out of the park as Luthen Rael - galactic spymaster running his operation out of Los Antiguedades Hermanos on Coruscant. Love the infighting among the Imperial officers. That's what it should look like, not the horseshit that was Reva and 5th Brother in the Obi Wan series. If they continue to build these characters properly and don't fuck it up, this kind of feels like Game of Thrones before it sucked.

This show is spy thriller first, Star Wars second. The 4th episode was the best yet, absolutely outstanding. I'm thoroughly impressed. It feels so nice to have a piece of Star Wars this high quality. Sensational acting, world building, the plot and story are super interesting, goddamn. This feels like S Tier Star Wars again. Best of the Disney era easily. The people getting bored either have some combination of short attention spans, not being into slow burn spy thrillers, and not appreciating the level of detail and nuance here.

Good to see you here bro

I think the people finding this boring aren't into spy thrillers and don't appreciate attention to detail, atmosphere, world building and characterization. I know that comes across as elitist as hell, but I dunno, those are my honest thoughts. Which, is fine I guess, Star Wars is originally action/adventure/sci-fantasy, this is MUCH more grounded and an entirely different genre, it's fine not to like it, but to say it sucks is/boring is almost objectively wrong from a qualitative standpoint. You can just not like something that's well crafted due to taste.

To reiterate, I think what some people may not be understanding is that it's spy thriller first, Star Wars second. Star Wars is just the aesthetic, the universe that this particular story operates in. You have to understand what you're watching.

The production quality of this show is something you don't see often. Seeing the quality of this show makes me even more disappointed in Obi-Wan Kenobi though.

Episode 4 was a 10/10 for me.

They really dove into political-spy intrigue this episode. Skarsgard is just killing it as Luthen. The guy is such a damn good actor. Luthen being a fine antique dealer is the perfect cover. It allows him to meet and talk with various powerful people in Coruscant while also being able to travel off world without much suspicion. In the interaction between Luthen and Mon Mothma, you could feel how tense the situation is and how careful someone in Mon Mothma's position has to be. I like the dynamic they set up with Mon Mothma's husband as well, bc it just raises the tension even more. She basically can't even slip up in her own home. Having dinner with Ars Dangor and Sly Moore? Well that should be "fun".....

Also, Coruscant looked amazing. And props to them making it look different from the Coruscant of the prequels. Showing the contrast between a Coruscant under the Republic vs under the Empire is a nice touch.

Giving us a look into the high ranks of the ISB was great. Liked how they showed the difference in what the public (and even those within the Imperial ranks) thinks the ISB does compared to the Major describing what they actually do. And the Major's dismissal of Dedra's concerns was a nice tie-in to what Andor mentioned in regards to the Empire's mindset. I'm interested in seeing how Dedra's character arc plays out.

I felt Andor's introduction to the team was well done. Enjoyed seeing the reaction of the team to Andor joining and the leader's attempt in trying to navigate through their concerns. Not easy having to convince and sell your team on him joining when you yourself aren't fully convinced. She pulled it off well, and comes off as someone who has gained their trust and respect over time. The set-up to the heist makes me excited to see how it will play out.

My only gripe with this show is the format/structure. It doesn't really flow naturally with the traditional weekly episode format. Definitely looking forward to watching it as a whole once the season is over.
