Werdum was significantly better on the ground than Jones. Gane obviously does horribly when taken down. So, my conclusion is that Gane would have basically stood zero chance against Werdum.

Ugh, Sherdog and ugly conclusions... it was mental thing - not grappling that defeated Gane.
This scared shitless Cyril would lose to any HW on the roster that night. He crumbled under pressure. Just look at the beginning of the fight - he didn't know what he does.

The same happened to Jan in Glover fight. There is more examples but overall - on every other day these fighters would do significantly better.

Gane’s grappling is awful but his tdd is not that bad. Werdum doesn’t have Jones takedowns. Still, all it would take is a slight mistake and it’s all over.

Werdum should absolutely win, long as he doesn't go full K1 Werdum as he sometimes did. Get away with that with Hunt, but probably not Gane

Maybe, but Werdum had shit-tier takedowns like many BJJ guys unfortunately.
If Werdum was able to get him down though, yes it would have been over quickly.

I doubt it, Gane doesn't have that kind of one punch KO power or TDD, also at the time of this fight JDS was basically totally unknown and Werdum showed up in the worst shape of his career to date at the time.

This opinion doesn't make sense to me, it's not like Jones punches hard so if Gane was terrified of Jones he was terrified of his grappling which he would be with Werdum as well.
