Television AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Live-Action Series (Renewed for Season 2 and 3)

In short, creative differences. Here's the article from Aug. 12, 2020:

Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko said in separate statements Wednesday that they came to believe their creative vision for the show wasn’t being supported. The show, which Netflix ordered in 2018, is still in development at the streamer.

“When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners,” DiMartino wrote on his website. “In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.”

In his own statement on Instagram, Konitetzko wrote that “there was no follow-through” on Netflix’s pledge to support the creators’ vision for the live-action show. “The general handling of the project created what I felt was a negative and nonsupportive environment,” he said, adding: “To be clear, this was not a simple matter of us not getting our way. Mike and I are collaborative people; we did not need all the ideas to come from us. As long as we felt those ideas were in line with the spirit and integrity of Avatar, we would have happily embraced them. However, we ultimately came to the belief that we would not be able to meaningfully guide the direction of the series.”

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that there were creative differences between DiMartino and Konietzko, Netflix and other creatives throughout the development process over how to adapt the animated series to live action. Those differences ultimately led to the creators’ departure.
Major red flag and cast choices are "who?"

This will suck.

Ah, so Netflix is going to give it the Masters of the Universe treatment then. Incoming turd.

Daniel Dae Kim to Play Fire Lord Ozai in Netflix's AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Live-Action Series

Daniel Dae Kim is joining the cast of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. The series, now overseen by showrunner Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow, Nikita), is described as a reimagined take on Nickelodeon’s beloved animated franchise.

Kim will portray the series regular role of Fire Lord Ozai, the ruthlessly driven leader of the Fire Nation who demands everyone live up to his impossible standards, especially his teen son, Prince Zuko. Ozai’s drive to conquer and unite the world under firebender rule is a family burden — he believes that it’s his destiny to finish a war started by his ancestors.

Kim joins a previously announced cast that includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko.

Albert Kim serves as the central writer on the show and exec produces alongside Dan Lin (The Lego Movie, Aladdin) and Lindsey Liberatore (Walker) of Rideback as well as Michael Goi (Swamp Thing). Roseanne Liang will direct alongside Goi, Jabbar Raisani and Jet Wilkinson.

Daniel Dae Kim counts Hawaii Five-0, Lost, The Divergent Series and Hellboy among his credits. He’s the exec producer of ABC’s The Good Doctor and next stars in Nat Geo’s scripted miniseries The Hot Zone: Anthrax, opposite Tony Goldwyn.

America seems to really love Avatar

America seems to really love Avatar

Its a watered down American version of how Anime series are. So it was really accesible to large audiences

I like it but story wise it’s nowhere near as good as what you can find in real anime

I have 0 hope for this now that the original showrunners left the project. Unless it somehow comes out to outstanding reviews, I won't be watching it.

On a related note, if you're a fan of the animated series, you should check out The Dragon Prince. It's one of the few shows that scratched the same sort of itch ATLA does (which makes sense seeing as it shares one of the head writers). The art and animation take a bit of getting used to (too much CGI for me) but it doesn't take too long to get over it.

Yep, i was already skeptical thanks to M.Nights shit show version....but the OG showrunners coming on board gave me hope....NOW that they are gone, its dead to me.

They’re listing the whole cast’s pronouns and yet there’s not even a single they/them in the bunch?

<DisgustingHHH>

It's that good.

Let me put it this way.

If I had to choose between never having seen The Wire, or never having seen The Last Airbender, I'd choose never having seen The Wire. I was that invested in The Last Airbender.

Cast looks promising. I'm cautiously optimistic.

The original showrunners were executive producers for the M. Night Shyamalan abomination.

They did an incredible job on the original series, but their involvement isn't make or break for me.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the greatest shows of all time IMO

This is a ridiculously difficult property to cast.

Only going to make one comment about this... Aang is a character who smiles 99.9% of the time and the scowl in this (ONE) pic is a bit off putting.

When I absolutely see this I'm going to go in with an open mind and a generous spirit, I don't envy them trying to satisfy Airbender fans.
