I found in no-gi that if you let your instincts take over your grips just end up where you need them.

Absolutely gorgeous throw from Oliveira.

Classic judo throws are so underutilised against the cage. You're essentially forced into upright judo territory there.

I hate it when people say 'judo throw'. There's a name for it (it looked like harai goshi to me) so whey can't people learn what they are called. You don't get people saying 'boxing punch'.

Rant over :)
I guess because people want an english translation to refer to. Nobody says "mae geri" instead of front kick either except for Sensei Seagal.

It would be so much easier if fighters just yelled out the Japanese name of the throw before hitting it. The coolest sounding Judo throw is yama arashi - "mountain storm." That would be hella bad ass if some MMA fighter started yelling "YAMA ARASHI!" before KOing fools with it. I kind of want to start doing this throw just to have an excuse to say the name.

YAMA ARASHI!!!

How could you throw Yama Arashi without a cross grip on the lapel? Without the cross grip it is Harai Goshi or Ashi Guruma. Gi MMA needs to be a thing!

That's what I am doing! I have learned my lesson from rushing back with injuries. I will take the summer and recover properly. no point rushing back in a couple weeks and doing real damage
Yep. When i am injured I try not to think about training, even if it's very difficult.

Gi MMA would be cool and I'm talking regular MMA, not combat sambo. That would be some James Bond/Brock Samson Kodokan blood Judo shit.

But regardless of grip, I thought the main difference was yama arashi generates the lift with the hands (it's categorized as a "hand throw") and harai goshi with the hip (it's a "hip throw")? The clip above is from the Kodokan Throwing Techniques video which shows yama arashi from same side grip and harai goshi from standard grip:

do I get to pretend I'm still training if my ukemi keeps me from dying on a weekly basis?

I'm so grateful for Judo and BJJ, but I'm to the point where I haven't grappled in a year.

which is crazy to me. I spent a lot of my 20s super resentful I hadn't gone further along my Judo path. up until the pandemic I'd never gone longer than a month off grappling 3x/week.

everything anybody says about the ski season this year was true. i feel like an asshole trying to even describe it because it's all a brag. i can be up at Alta/Bird in a half hour and we averaged 5 inches of snow per day this season. I didn't miss a weekend between November and Memorial Day.

i guess i'm old enough now that i figure if I'm gonna wear out my joints, I want to wear them out on the mountain? but it's just weird...pajama grappling was the focus of my life for the past 20 years, now there's just a bunch of gis in a pile at the bottom of my closet...

I hear you, mate.

I had 18 months off and now I'm lucky if I get to train once a month now there's a toddler to love and take care of.

I am thrilled however, that the little one has developed a perfect front breakfall with no help from me. He got his giant head from me, so it's extra important.

figure a few nights of judo class when they're a toddler saves a whole heap of ER bills when they're a kid

In my case it's kind of the opposite. I train 3 times per week at the moment even if I have 2 small children. But I do have a very accomodating wife who gets her soccer mom nights at will on W-Es.

In my case, training is literally the only thing I do outside of family and work. No omelet without breaking eggs and all that...

Pretty much the reason why I don't want kids.
I was concerned about how having a kid would affect my hobbies. But whenever I have the chance to either train or come home and squish his little face and listen to him talk gibberish as he falls asleep, I choose his little face every time.

I'm glad you're able to do that mate.

I work three jobs at the moment, so I never feel like I get to see my son enough. I have to choose him over judo any chance I get!
