Look… it’s a big fight, it’s much bigger than most.

That said… they’ll market to you that you’re witnessing the GOAT of the sport, will be taking on the HW GOAT, one night only! Dream match! If Jon wins, it’s over!!! He’s the GOAT, it’s secured!

But, then you have peeps like me that look at this bout and just say ‘merhhh’.

Stipe is old. Real old. Also really inactive. Last time we saw him, got absolutely slept by Francis. Man has been a part-timer for a long time, and many accuse him of mopping up a load of aging legends to build his resume. Whether you agree or disagree, they aren’t really wrong, right?

Jon, leaves his fan base waiting for HW for 4-6 years beyond the genuine asking point. Fights Gane, and submits him in 3 minutes. Now he’s fighting 42 year old Stipe?

We can start faking the relevance of these W’s and act like he’s beating prime Cro Cop and Barnett, but if we are honest, these wins are real underwhelming.

I welcome your opinions. Am I just a hater lol?

I don't know.

Gane vs Francis looked like a clash of elite Hw 2.0 and the fight was fight.

Both guys seem to be out of their primes but we could have a banger, you never know.

It's mostly important because it could be a nice retirement fight for the goat.

Look at this as a retirement fight for Jones/Stipe and it's a way easier pill to swallow.

The UFC is protecting Jones, no way they would let Jones fight an actual top HW on a winstreak like Pav

The UFC doesn't believe that Jones can beat Pav which is why they are silent on that matchup

Had to give a softball to Jones for his HW debut with No ground game Gane and now old Stipe coming off a KO loss for his 1st title defense

For me, it’s not a delusional ‘if he fights over fighters he’ll lose’ narrative…

This isn’t even a cry for Pavlovich or Almeida, I just want realistic analysis of this HW run.

just a sconch of hater. lol. i can see the perspective you're presenting very well but for me it's an exciting fight because of who they are and what they mean to my mma watching experience over the years.

Also HW is a garbage fire so that makes this one a little more palpable as well. Pav is close/next-ish...

It is very laughable that the UFC is protecting Jones, Jones himself would take that fight against Pav but the UFC are very silent on the matchup as they don't believe he would beat Pav

They need to have some faith in one of their GOATs that he can beat a HW contender on a winning streak like Pav

faking the relevance of these W’s
It’s fair criticism. UFC is fully complicit and enabling of the illegitimacy of the current HW champ, via the marketing, the softball matchmaking, and the expulsion of the former HW champ. I for one am not impressed by the newest belt notches of the “goat”.

If Stipe comes out shocking the world then that would be incredible and awesome but it’s unfair and unrealistic to expect that of him at his age and this point in his life and career.

I hope you’re right that it’s all the UFC’s doing and not Jones’s personal choice to deny Pav.

Dana never liked Stipe and Stipe doesn't deserve a title fight.
I guess Jon and Dana got together and planned who is the easiest fight for him. Just like Ngannou, Pavlovich is risky matchup no matter what their grappling are.
Jones is already goat, it's already secured. Now he is getting bonus points like Floyd

is Stipe on his last fight on contract?

it’d be great if he won then decided to follow Francis for a rematch

Stipe will obviously sell more. About Pav, Jon said UFC would have to make it make financial sense.

Its odd to see people say no ground game Gane, which he does have a ground game and has three submissions. But what I read before the Gane fight were people saying jones could not even take down Reyes and he would have a hard time with Gane and now Gane was a softball.

So who would not be a softball ? Pav ?

Pav the guy who lost to Overeem ?

Some of you have the oddest conspiracy theories but this is sherdog. It went from Jones was scared to fight a top HW or Ngannou, to now he would fight a top HW but the UFC is protecting him and shielding him.

No idea why i come back here.

I'm still excited to see the two toughest dads at the BBQ throw some hands

I'm excited because of the name value involved but yeah i'm not convinced Stipe is the best challenger available now, fringe top 5 maybe. Guy is 40 and the DC and Ngannou fights took a lot out of him.

That's a conspiracy theory? You just validated his point. Biden voter detected.

What's wrong with his comment? Pav lost one fight his whole career if I recall correctly and it was a UFC debut to one of the best HWs of all-time. He's significantly better now, and is turning people into mush. He's young for a HW and has crazy power in his fists.

Jones had many opportunities to fight prime HWs. Waited two years to duck Ngannon, then fought a terrible wrestler, yes terrible, and fought to his advantage. Smart move by Jones. Now is fighting a man that has been out for 2 years and will likely retire win or lose. Seems to be a lot of Mayweather vibes going on.

And Jones is smart enough to know that a padded record with a bunch of wins.....it still a record with a bunch of wins. And that zero casual fans care about strength of opponents and title defense or anything compared to things like 'undefeated' or whatnot.
