Back when Usman was champ, I had him as a pretty clear n°2 behind GSP, but with his 2 losses to Leon followed by that loss to Borz... if he loses again, he leaves the WW silver medal vacant for now, and whoever is bronze (Leon if he wins his next couple in impressive fashion?) will take his place.

Which is why you wait until their career is over before deciding where they stand. If their greatness can be effected by future losses then it's not real.

We can actually pinpoint the millisecond Usman solidified himself as the #2

I can see why Dana likes Vince McMahon so much. He could never get over that GSP didn't continue until he lost. The tradition of putting the next champ over as Vince put it about Bret Hart. This is Dana's way of trying to screw GSP and set the narrative just like he did in the press conference after the Hendricks fight.

It's an untenable position at this point though.

I can’t help but think he’s saying that in part to build up Khamzat’s win over post prime 185 Usman.

And as a huge Dana fan / ufc shill, I totally disagree

Is there some way yer shoops could do a year by year play by play of MMA history? Cau'se I would dev a website specific just to that lol

Sure bud. It would be pretty cool to make a slideshow of it all.

I like your idea too.

<DCWhoa>

Even after their careers are over, athletes' careers can be altered.

Piss tests coming back hot thanks to new tech. Records crushed. Admissions of fights being thrown (hey, it's possible)
Or lay such a ass whoopping that you beat the guy out of his prime, and all you get is "wouldn't have been the same shit in his prime"

Anderson Silva getting kocked down by Jake Paul doesn't help either

Thank God for Ngannou, even if he got whooped by Joshua like god intended... he wasn't supposed to go so far and got to a split decision with a top elite champion like Fury

It goes...

GSP

Hughes

Usman

Saying Usman is the GOAT is ridiculous tbh.
Adding a yes... and sir... to this. I love all of 'em as fighters, but recency bias and other shit aside, that's the fair ass... ess... ment? I can make a case for 2, but its gps n hughes man, i really can't see a way around that.

A 47 year old losing a boxing match has no bearing on what Silva accomplished in MMA when he was younger. Also he pooped for PEDs while he was fighting and is still the GOAT.

It's normal he's just trying to cater to the newer fans, he tried to do the same with Anderson, claiming Israel is the MW goat. Anyway one and everyone who started watching this sport prior to the influx of McGregor fans knows damn well that the best WW
ever is a Karate Fighter from Quebec.

I thought it was pretty accurate myself sir.
Recency bias is a huge problem with this sport tbh with you.

The fans that have only seen different eras from clips will never get the context of those times.

Im glad I got to witness all the eras firsthand.

He's completely right : far better competition and under USADA.

Usman is a better fighter than GSP.

This is a boring argument and the poll is clear about it. Dana hates GSP for retiring with the belt twice, good enough, but Usman isn't the GOAT nor close to being the GOAT at 170, and if we are comparing era to era he's not second place either. It made lots of sense to hype him as GOAT while he was a champ and defending and hopefully (for the ufc) going on a giant title defense run, but now that he's lost 3 in a row I don't really see the appeal other than just sucking him off to his face. Usman had a long long way to go.

The worst part about this shit is Usman was an awesome champ and great fighter, saying this when he never got close to a best of all time just makes his career look stupid if you dive into it.

Here are some objective stats.

Record
GSP
26-2 - 93% win rate
Hughes 45-9 - 83% win rate
Usman 20-4 - 83% win rate

Title fight record (including interim)
GSP - 13-2
Hughes - 10-3
Usman - 6-2

Undisputed Championship Defenses
GSP
- 9
Hughes - 8 (I included Riggs fight, still a defense if a challenger shows up and fails to make weight imo)
Usman - 5

Number of divisional world championships
GSP
- 2
Hughes - 1
Usman - 1

Unresolved losses
GSP
- 0
Usman - 4
Hughes - Too big of a list for me to go through lol

Weakest Defense
GSP
- Nick Diaz got to slide into title contention only because Condit had a knee injury. He was on an 11-1 tear in the 2nd rate leagues and had beaten BJ up pretty badly, but still shouldn't have got the shot and only did because of injury. Note here that the undeserved title shot wasn't rewarded with another title shot after it was clear they weren't in the same league.
Usman - Masvidal 2x just pure LOL. 6-4 coming into his title fight, which there is no shit to be talked about as it was a short notice replacement. But we all saw it was a joke of a fight and the rematch was an even bigger joke.
Hughes - I am not familiar enough with contenders pre-2004 so I can't take a good swing at this, he probably has the worst just based on the era.

Win Finishing Rate - This shouldn't matter whatsoever but people like to talk about it anyways. A 50-45 has always been more clear indicator to me than a quick stoppage on who the better fighter is.
GSP - 54%
Hughes - 77%
Usman - 50%

This will be hilarious again in a few years when Kamaru is out of the UFC and Dana and the promotion has a shiny new dominant WW champ they will parade as the best ever
