UFC FOX 23 - PBP/discussion

oh shit i fell asleep after knight caceres fight and now watching the fights. wasnt a good night for me. i think shelton and nate should have got the decision. also nash and cottrell were winning before they lost. but it is what it is, i'll be back. no big regrets. altitude messed up many of my logical bets.

Don't know about others but these 2 January events been real funky, you have masvidal and Shev the most consistent safety decision point fighters going and both of them decide to actually finish fights, not just any fights but against no1-no5 ranked opponents and both struggled at times against worse opponents recently.

Very hard and inconsistent judging also, barely broke even this month but just glad we got 3 more ufc events each week coming.

Are you going to remove your handle

I was on Shelton and Nate too but they lost, no bs decisions this time

And Nash was getting rocked hard and eating tons of hard leg kicks. I think the fight was a scrappy back and forth. That's how a lot of fights go, there's an eb and flow. Nash certainly wasn't enough in control of that fight to say he was winning.

Nash would've been up 2 rounds to none if he lasted the 30 secs left or whatever it was. Maybe i'm just being a salty Nash backer, but seems reasonable to say he was winning

Nothing against the great people of Denver Colorado and other mountainous regions across the world, but I hate when the UFC holds events in the same stratosphere of the peak of Mount Fuji FFS… I mean, it was it as bad tonight as well and we had to Mark Hunt / Ben Rothwell fights in Denver, but that altitude does force fighters to hold back and not be able to go at breakneck speed.

e.g. I do believe that had Shelton fought at sea level he probably beats Pantoja quite easily. Both of those guys really showed some skill though.. Promising prospects fo' sho. Pantoja used experience to win last night. Hard to believe that Shelton was pick number 15 on the show! In the coming years I think we will see a Magny like a growth from his time on TUF to his UFC proper showings.

Love that belly down armbar. Reminds me of Fedor

That's called a Russian armbar too. Well, that's what my BJJ instructor always referred to it as. A belly down armbar is a staple of Sambo teaching and Judo to a lesser degree.

For a real good b example of a Russian arm bar in the UFC watch how TJ Waldburger hits it on ol' Jake Hecht. Essentially the goal is to turn to see the opposing direction of your opponent.

That right there is a frightening fucking concept! To think that Valentina didn't win the first round is absolutely insane. Like to the point that you mixed up who was who LOL
Cmon just look at the stats

Total strikes round 1 pena 46 shew 25

Sign strikes 20-8

Plus finished the round with a close armbar attack

Besides those trips shew on defence mode the entire round

I'll go back and watch it. I only seen it once and granted I wasn't doing any real time scoring because I wasn't live betting, but I thought that they were basically in neutral positions up against the cage with the only momentous activity happening when Valentina hit the two trips. The second placing her firmly side control. I know that Jiuliana landed a lot of knee strikes, but didn't think they were very effective and getting tossed to the mat twice like she did made me score it for Valentina. Of course there was the armbar at the end but it to was it very close. If it wasn't 10-9 Shev then it seems to be a 10-10 round IMO. But I will go back and watch again. I will go back and watch again.

Did anyone notice how pena punched herself in the face while shev had her up against the fence, not sure how that one counts on the stats

@ the 4:10 mark

I guess she deserved to loose just based on that alone

weee, no FOTN given, got a push on my knight-caceres play

didn't see anyone post a nash-jingliang FOTN prop, so i think that is good news for everyone, cause that was FOTN

I agree, just rewatched the first round and imo it was all Pena apart from the 2 takedowns shevchenko hit, with which she did not much, and Pena even had a sub attempt

So only 1 judge gave Mas a 10-8 in rd 1. Interesting
