I used to race cat 2/semipro in cycling and also used to do trampoline competitions when I was a kid. When I first trained bjj with Michael Joker Guymon he told me that I was more coordinated than most beginners. I also know that my cardio is an advantage. Other than those 2 slight advantages, I was still just as bad as any other beginner but I think I improved faster than normal because of my training knowledge.

I was talking to my old wrestling/boxing coach about this once and Conor McGregor training movement with Ido Portal. His opinion was that McG would be better off using that same time training martial arts.

I understand his point, but I do think that cross training has its place.

Idk try it out

well i know that it isnt gonna allow u t go in and dominate lol but if you are a black belt already ad trying t develop something else t incredibly help balance sure it can more than help

Unicycling might do almost nothing for your takedown defense and balance on solid ground. It's an apples to oranges thing.

Former unicycle rider, wrestler, Judoka and boxer here. I can confirm that learning how to ride a unicyle did not meaningfully improve or impact my grappling or takedown defense.

When I was stationed in the middle east, in the evenings I used to grapple two or three times a week open mat with other grapplers. We would start on the feet and go for takedowns to submission.

I used to ride a bicycle about a mile across the compound to the gym tent. Out of boredom, I started riding the bike with no hands on the handlebars for long stretches but one evening, an MP stopped me and said that wasn't allowed on base. I looked it up in the base regulations and sure enough, it was required to have both hands on the handlebars when riding a bicycle.

That night I ordered a unicycle. It took a month for it to arrive and clear customs but I spent 2 weeks teaching myself to ride it, about 20-30 min/evening. Then I made a point to ride it to the gym, in view of the MPs and they couldn't say anything because there were no handlebars. Moral victory complete.

But that thing was a pain in the ass. Takes a lot of hip and thigh work to maintain balance as you're pedaling to keep yourself stabilized, especially when changing direction or speed. Way harder to balance than on a bike. For sure it had no impact on my TD defense but if anything, might have improved my guard work because you have to control and balance the seat with your hips just like you might control an opponent in guard.

But I didn't play much guard in those days and I still think you'd be better served just drilling guard work if that's your intent.

Ain't gonna lie, was good for some quality laughs. Even the MPs thought it was pretty good. First time they saw me they were like "W... T... F. Well... he doesn't have handlebars so what we gonna say?" Eventually they started giving me a thumbs up when I'd ride by.

Unless they're fighting on a boat in the north Atlantic... Or maybe on unicycles themselves...

There is a guy in my townhouse complex I met a few weeks ago who has two unicycles. He said he has to get some part and hopefully he can show me how it's done. He has two different kinds. Regular height and one of those tall ones that you'd see at the fair.

While I have no experience with a unicycle (yet), I can attest to the improved balance using balance boards. Have you ever tried them? I have a bongo board that I'll take to the gym with me and get lots of odd looks from people as I'm doing different balance and lifts on it.

I've noticed situations where I have lost my balance trying to navigate around something or slip on my feet, only to quickly regain balance. I've found it is even improving issues like knee valgus, core strengthening/muscle integration, overall improvement of posture and alignment of joints in the body.
