If Khabib leaves right now, who would fight for the LW title?

just cause a family member dies, you're expected to retire? people die all the time, you don't just end your life...give up your way to make a living...you grieve and move on...like we all do.

He's already wealthy, the person who trained him his whole life is gone . He doesn't have to continue fighting. He can move on like you said .

If we go by the current rankings then it's pretty obvious to be DP or CM.

Top Lightweight Contenders:

  • 1. Justin Gaethje (22-2-0; 155 lb / 70 kg) INTERIM CHAMP
  • 2. Tony Ferguson (25-4-0; 155 lb / 70 kg)
  • 3. Dustin Poirier (25-6-0, 1NC; 155 lb / 70 kg)
  • 4. Conor McGregor (22-4-0; 155 lb / 70 kg)
  • 5. Dan Hooker (20-8-0; 155 lb / 70 kg)
I don't see Ferg getting a rematch and Hooker is last of the pack who just lost to Dustin.

Poirier has the more significant win in the division as of recent so I would prolly toss the IC w/Justin to him. However considering how the UFC oft operates it would likely be Conor.

Either way, if it happens Khabib gets an immediate match with whoever is holding the belt for him.

Why a travesty? Dustin has only just fought #5 Hooker to a 5 round war since he lost to Khabib last September. By contrast Conor KO'd then #4 Cerrone in a flawless 40 seconds in January.

Seems obvious that Conor should be ahead of Poirier. He got a higher ranked win, and did so in far more impressive fashion. He also performed better against Khabib than Poirier did.

The only reason to go with Poirier is if it's to rematch Gaethje or Conor, given the rematch narrative. He's either there to prove it's not a fluke he's better than Gaethje, or there to prove he's gotten better since he lost to Conor.

Otherwise Conor/Gaethje is the obviously better option.
Sorry to kill your dream.
Cerrone was coming off two bad TKO losses. He was not the #4 (though UFC is notorious for ranking fighters however the fuck they want, just so it serves their narrative).
Oh, and BTW, that fight was at WW, so it should have absolutely no bearing at the LW division.

Bottom line, Conor fights handpicked opponents and is not active nearly enough to keep his standings.
Hell, did he retire?? He should not be ranked, let alone anywhere close to the top 5.

Conor should pick a division and start fighting top 5-10 ranked opponents, then a top 3 and only in case he remains active (and wins), then he may fight for the belt.

hallelujah!!

damn you guys move quick. If conor is allowed to leave away for years, khabib will allow some time to grieve before he makes a decision. If he does leave, gaethje may not even be in the picture. I'd imagine he'd had to defend his IC belt.
Wouldnt you expect khabib to be a better person/more professional than Conor and provide some clarity on when or if he fights next?

Or is he entitled to sit out for over a year and keep everyone in the dark because conor did it first.

That got him his first title shot. It shouldn't get him his 2nd.

He beat hooker recently at 155

Conor fought a guy at 170 that's on a losing streak

Conor is also retired, so should be moved out of the rankings

Anyway we all know the ufc is a mickey mouse organisation and conor would be first in line

Personally I think Khabib will carry on and win the fight, so it won't matter

If Khabib vacates then the interim champ is elevated just like what happened with Conor when Aldo was the interim champ. Justin would then be the undisputed champ and would likely make his first defense against Conor for the payday.

After this terrible news for Khabib and his family his future remains uncertain. IF he decides to leave ( completely understandable), who do you think will fight Gaethje for the lw belt? Poirier? McGregor?
Dustin vs Gaethje but not in September because Dustin needs sometime to recover if Conor want to return this is his moment

kabib will set an example.

If Khabib were to give up his title, Gaethje should be made full champion, its the whole point of the interim title.

That said, Poirier should be next. Conor is out of the question without fans and I wouldnt even risk him running his mouth about Khabib's dad should he win. Which is something he would absolutely do

In a sport based on merit it would be Poirer vs Gaethje.

But we all know what would really happen...
