The MilkMan Delivers: The Road to 40

Signed up for a half marathon, it's in July and I'll be doing it with my girlfriend who will at that point be my wife (wedding cancelled twice this year due to Covid). First run was today, a nice easy 2 miles. It took 20 minutes and then I walked for another 15 minutes. I've got a plan that I'm following, so should be good to put in a semi respectable showing come July.
Good luck.

Road or trail?

We did 3 trails runs, 10k, half, full. By the time we got to the full, she was 6 weeks pregnant which is convenient because she didn't train more than a single 15 miler (4 miles of walking at the end).

More enjoyable running through some hills and valleys in scotland in August then on the road down south.

Road run mate, all pretty flat. I'm popping up to Fort William again in August with the family, going to see if my boys can summit Ben Nevis with us, they're pretty fit lads what with their judo, BJJ and gymnastics, so it should be fine.

I remember you saying you had family up that way before.

How old are the boys?
I'm going to be back from my next draft hopefully in time for when I can start getting the boy in to the martial arts....and start doing some myself finally again.

At the age of 42 probably. If I'm lucky.

Boys are 11 and 8, they did Snowdon a few years ago with no issues so should be OK for Ben Nevis. Yeah they both love training, which is great, I don't (and wouldn't anyway) force them into doing it if they really didn't enjoy it, but the older one especially begs me to take him to training even more than he already does.

Run 4.7miles 55 minutes - Sunday is "long run" day, took it slow and steady.

Tight on time, so supersetted SOHP with trapbar deadlift to save changing bars around etc...I'm going to drop the boring but big on squats and deads, as with the recent introduction of running, my legs are going to be taking a battering!

SOHP
30kg X 5
40kg X 5
45kg X 5
50kg X 3
57.5kg X 3
65kg X 3
35kg X 5 sets of 10 reps

Trapbar Deadlift
70kg X 5
90kg X 5
110kg X 5
127.5kg X 5
147.5kg X 5
167.5kg X 8

Nice run and lifting! How do you like trapbar deads? I love bb deads, but I got a trap bar because of my lower back disc issues. Unloaded it feels crowded at my sides and I assume that will be worse loaded. I'm a large mammal that is currently too large so maybe that's my problem?

Thanks @AbdominalSnoman - the running is something I haven't done for a long time until now so am slowly trying to adapt to it. I like the trapbar, I don't use it too much but it was a handy alternative today where I was short on time so could switch between the overhead press using the barbell and then deadlift using the trapbar (I lift at home). I could see it feeling quite crowded if you are on the larger side - I'm not that big so it's OK for me.

Well at least that should mean that losing some girth should help. I did lift at home and I still have the set up. We'll see if I can make it happen again.

BTW, congratulations on the engagement and the half marathon. My wife and I run together and it's great. No stronger accountability or motivation when you're both into it.
