Eric Clapton vs David Gilmour

Both amazingly talented

But I gotta go with Gilmore because...
Pink Floyd>everyone

Nobody said Gilmour is God

Y'all are a bunch of drug addicts

I will go with Clapton, he is generally a better, and more technical player

I enjoy listening to Gilmour's music more, though. I feel as if his solos are all somewhat similar, while Clapton is a much more diverse player

SRV whoop(ed) both of them though

Different styles. Neither could really take the other’s place in a band or on a project. They are each amazing at the style they play. If I had to choose, I’d say Clapton is better.
Funny you say that. Guess who the guitarist was on Roger Waters first solo album?

David Gilmour, Chuck Schuldiner and Frank Zappa are my three favorite guitarists and the three biggest influences on my guitar playing. While I do enjoy Clapton's work it just bores me after awhile which is why I don't listen to Eric that much. Gilmour however I can listen to his solo and Pink Floyd material all the time and it never bores me at all. Dave is an absolute master of cadence, intonation, and pacing on the guitar. Through string- bending he is able to play the guitar like a person sings, giving it mood, passion, and life that is unmatched by many guitarists who can play faster or are even more technically advanced. To put it into perspective Gilmour uses his soul to play!

Shameless plug of my David Gilmour drawing I did back in 2018.

Clapton is the more versatile and talented guitarist.

I'd say Clapton mainly because I've listened to a lot more of his stuff, both pretty great. I do enjoy both of their ability to be understated, most of my favourite players are over the top shredders so it's good to have some subtlety sometimes.

I listen to Clapton unplugged and honestly, it's so good. I like Cream a lot, D&TD, he's done so many good things. Then you have Gilmour, who seemingly played with a silk glove, just smooth and beautiful. I dont know, but they are different. Clapton can do so many things Gilmour can't, but l'm sure Gilmour doesn't even think that way (nor should he). The value is High for both.

That said, Duane Allman means more than both of them to me (purely as a player, as he wasn't as much into songwriting, although Little Martha is incredible and Hot'lanta a tune I can't even begin to talk about). Clapton could tell you about HIS value.

I'd say Clapton. Clapton has better fundamentals, variety and technical ability though Gilmour is more innovative.

Clapton is a better technical guitarist and gets more props from me for being a good front man and singer, but if I'm being honest, Gilmore has so many more solos that are burnt indelibly into my brain and that I love, so I'm choosing him.

Agreed. Making that guitar sing and creating immersive melodies is so important. Derek Trucks is a master at turning that guitar into a voice

the opening solo:

I like both, but prefer Gilmour by a bit.

No, don't misunderstand me, they both know the guitar very well, but why is everyone so sure Clapton is more technically skilled? Clapton relies mostly on the blues scale which he has absolutely mastered. But, Gilmours solos are much more melodic and he seems to mix approaches/scales more than Clapton.
