Social Housing is a human right?

You're right, man.

In the richest country to ever exist ever, there should be people sleeping under bridges. There should be children sleeping in the woods cause they are too old to go with their mothers to the shelter.

We need to put bootstraps under bridges.

Oh man, this is a conflicting issue for me. I did homeless outreach for a few years and I will tell you that being homeless is tough and I don’t wish that on anyone. I believe that housing should be a right but there are those that are currently homeless that simply could not exist in any type of living environment. They would tear the place up, not pay rent, and break any and all rules because of mental illness and addiction issues.

The question isn’t that housing is or is not a right but how do we pay for it and continue to pay for it for those that can exist in housing?

Drug addiction and crime should automatically bar people from these types of support/safety nets. I believe housing should be a right for everybody as long as they aren't criminals/pedos/drug addicts. A lot of these bums still get plenty of food and shelter from the govermnment but if you kick em out of town and throw them into the wild, they'll quickly realize how good they have it living in society

We are the richest country in the world. There are something like an estimated 17 million unoccupied homes in the US and 500,000 homeless. Even if we were to build them small decent housing we could easily do it. Because again. We are the richest country in the history of the world

Probably of those homes are crack-shacks in the Rust Belt, you couldn’t pay people to live there because even if it isn’t a dangerous ghetto, it probably has a terrible local economy.

Somehow I missed typing in “half”

I don’t know what the precise number is, but it just seems like yet another misleading statistic, It seems doubtful that the big metropolises (where people actually live) have a lot of vacant housing.

It seems like a stat that primarily affects people in middle America, but is used by liberals in New York and California to justify whatever agenda they’re pushing, when we know that these places are facing housing shortages and disproportionately hurt by housing costs, but they’re not dealing with abandoned housing, because almost everything is taken.

That would disqualify most of them. They need a primary and second chance house that will help them and foster a sober living. The first house would be where they get help for their issues-mental, criminal, addiction. They have people that work with them as advocates that work with them to resolve any criminal issues. I think the biggest issues are the addiction, mental illness, and joblessness. No alcohol or drugs on premed but not an abstinence house meeting if you get fucked up away from the house, as long as you get back by curfew. I have a bunch of ideas to run a place like this.

There is a lot of empty housing man. Housing is a big industry for money laundering. We have lots of foreigners that buy up property. Build houses and leave them empty.

Well, I’m sure it’s a lot in absolute numbers because it’s a big country, but I doubt that stopping Carlos Slim from buying an apartment in the middle of Manhattan at an inflated price is somehow going to help the working class.

Canada aside, these are upscale places where foreigners are just injecting a ton of cash into our economy.

I have a hard time saying someone has a right to something when it depends on others. To me, rights are more about concepts and ideas. Like the right to vote. Freedom of speech. The pursuit of happiness.

If you say housing is a human right, you need people to build those homes. Is it their right to build the home? You can't force someone to be a builder. It's just like health care. While I fully support Medicare 4 All, it's hard to say health care is a right when you have to have nurses and doctors. If there are no nurses or doctors or there aren't enough for some reason, then you don't have a right.

I do think it's the government's job to provide affordable housing for those less fortunate and keep housing affordable otherwise. A right though? That's probably going too far. I don't want a government nanny state where we depend on the government for every need. That's dystopia to me.

My ideal solution is to provide homeless people housing for 6-12 months if they agree to get into government supported training programs/short term work to give them a head start in life. By 6-12 months, they will stop being homeless and can afford to rent.

it should be a privilege. if you ruin that privilege by demonstrating what you detailed above, then it should be revoked. IMO

I don't know what exactly the girl holding this sign is trying to say. That if you can't pay for housing, other people or the government are morally obligated to pay your rent?

How many libs in this forum actually believe this?

I think it would represent an ethical civilization.

In Denmark, a person only sleeps on the streets if they reject the place the govt gives to them. I've seen their housing for singles and for small families. It's quite basic but not bad. They also get a basic living wage. Parents get extra for each child. Healthy food is cheap to purchase. Unhealthy food is expensive. Restaurants are hella expensive.

For the record, I'm Independent Politic.
