Does cresent kick work (video)

It's a very common kick in kyokushin nowadays.

It's the equivalent of someone slapping you in the face using their foot - in terms of how the impact would feel.

It's sneaky and tends to land often enough in Kyokushin because most people do not expect a kick to come in from that angle.

Got a guy at my gym who swears by the crescent kick. Landed it a couple times in his matches but to me it always seems like one of those things you do to get your opponent guessing and score points with the judges.

A friend of mine has used it in fights, mainly as a flashy technique. I have used it playing around in sparring. You can throw it to the liver. Also to the inside leg. Good technique

I would like to point out that all examples of cresent kick here have been the inside cresent kick with bent knee and snap
There are too many different kicks generally called cresent kicks in english as generalization, and they are not the same -not an uncommon problem when using english terms.

Usually "cresent kick" in TMA refers to a kick where the leg is almost fully straight out all the way through

I have seen the outside straight leg cresent kick used effectively in full contact.
It is a sneaky kick to do from a close in range as there is no bodyshift like a regular roundkick, and if you can get the guard out of the way first it will hit completely without warning pushing him off balance and hopefully down. you will not score a KO as he will get up as fast as he fell over, but you might get a standing count. at the very least you will shake him up a bit. But it is not something I would recommend to do often
I would not try a straight leg inside cresent kick in a full contact fight at all.

Crescent kicks are for defense against weapons, not Kickboxing.

That's their original intention.

It's just as common to do it with a bent leg in TaeKwonDo. It doesn't fundamentally change the kick either way. It's called the same thing.

I believe in Tang Soo Do they prefer the leg to be straight but it doesn't matter.

Btw, Chuck Norris said in a private conversation with a random that he thinks that goofy kick is underrated in sparring.

Show me one crescent kick KO in a high level kickboxing bout.

NOT phone booth, non face punching Kyokushin, which is not reality.

There is one tumbling version I've seen in Kickboxing. But I am referring to standing up.

That a was front kick. Probably taught by Steven Seagal

Nope.

100% a crescent kick. With a front kick your kneecap stays facing north but as you can see when his right leg swings round his kneecap ends up facing north-west.

If you don't agree that's fine but that's just how it is. More importantly the Taekwondo Crescent Kick Tutorial video that another user posted above does not work in any striking sport outside of Taekwondo. It's too easy to block and highly punishable if you don't get the KO. Crescent kick KOs do happen in kickboxing but it's extremely rare and it's more like what i posted.

Definately not a crescent kick. He hit with the ball of the foot.

When i did kickboxing over a decade ago we were shown how to do a crescent kick, along with the advice not to use it in competitions as it's not practical. But when we did practise it we weren't shown this BS about keeping your body so straight you can be countered and knocked off balance with ease, or that you have to hit perfectly with the sides of your feet. That taekwondo way would get you killed 9/10 times in kickboxing. Going in a crescent motion, using the toes if you have to, and even rotating your base foot was shown to us.

Like i said you don't have to agree but it's still a crescent kick. Every site that lists the results for that fight also has it listed as a crescent kick.

Not starting an argument but that's how we were taught and that's how every results site lists this fight. Sorry if you disagree.

What are you smoking?, crescent kicks are not used in TKD unless there's some clinching.

I'm gonna stop replying as it's evident you know absolutely nothing about crescent kicks.

Have a great day.

Not a "high level kickboxing fight" but pretty cool to see nonetheless, the 1:08 mark shows it the clearest I think:
