Social Housing is a human right?

We need to make housing more affordable. Lower and middle incomes now have it harder to achieve than ever before. Let's fix housing for the people actually trying to work for it first before we give it away for free to people who have done nothing with their lives

Even if they have a right to housing, they don't have a right to privately owned property. The government can buy houses / apartments at market price or build them and rent them out cheaply at a loss if they want to though.

You want a house, get a job and buy one.

Taxpayers don't owe you housing. There is ample opportunity to own a home and anyone who pretends there isn't can sell that shit somewhere else. Because im not buying.

Why stop at housing being a right? Shouldn’t everyone have a right to a Ferrari, Beach House, Yacht and private Jet like Lebron, Will Smith and Tom Cruise?
Its more expensive to keep these people homeless than it is to assist them to be functioning members of society. There are so many taxpayer payed man hours connected to the activities homeless people I think most people cant imagine.

We are not talking about mansions and ferraris, give them a place to stay thats basicly 4 walls, a toilet, bed and small kitchen and help them back on their feet, or let them get help in case of mental illness.

The damage done to your society by ignoring the weak and those who for whatever reason fall thru the cracks with the excuse like taxpayers and other bullshit is stupid.

You could probably solve the homeless crisis with 1/10 of the bomb budget from just one middle eastern country, and you taxpayers sure seems happy to pay for that.

You would get the money back when these people start paying their own taxes anyways.

What is money better spent, bombing the moslems or helping your own countrymen?

If you care so much about people sleeping under bridges, why don't you go find yourself a person under a bridge and completely change their life with your own money? Prove that you care as much as you pretend to on here.

This is like telling me to grab my gun and jump into a firefight between the police and a group of fleeing bank robbers "if you really support law and order".

People who live under bridges need support from mental health professionals in secure facilities full of trained personnel.

My obligation to the unhoused involves paying my taxes in order to support these necessary services. In the exact same way that I pay my taxes to support the police who may end up engaged in firefights with fleeing bank robbers.

Come up with a way to figure out who deserves the help and who doesn't and everyone will be on board.

I personally know someone who is living in a motel and about to be homeless. He refuses to work, takes advantage of people and is abusive toward women who don't allow him to freeload off of them. I don't want to spend my hard earned money on helping people like this.

This is the issue... a huge issue.

Housing is NOT a human right
Equal Access to Housing definitely should be

Maybe the Government should be looking at all the foreign money and large hedge funds buying up housing. At the minimum, these entities should be taxed at higher rates than any citizen's primary residence. Like a tariff I guess...

This has to be one of the dumbest replies yet. This is the attitude of citizens of the richest country to ever exist. "I don't care. Children can live under bridges just so long as I'm not inconvenienced at all."

Do you know your "hard earned" money pays for police to protect drug dealers and thieves from getting beat up in the streets by their victims' families and friends?

Obviously home ownership isn't a right. There are homeless shelters for people to stay in temporarily, but of course you don't have the right to force people to buy or build you a house for free.
How do you feel about the right to an attorney, a trial with a jury of your peers and a judge, etc? Lots of people being forced to do something (for money, just like the hypothetical shelter builder). Hell, jury members get paid shit and have to miss work to make sure some potential criminal’s rights aren’t violated. Disgusting.

Yeah I don't agree with that either.

Ok so you don't care enough to do anything. Point taken.

You realize the vast majority of people under bridges are heroin and meth users right? Little 5 year old Timmy isn't living in those tents and if he was, no one would have a problem helping little Timmy out of that situation.

You're advocating that we all pay for housing so these people can lay around doing drugs all day while giving absolutely nothing back to society. I say if you believe that, then go make someone's dream come true. Go find a local heroin addict and put them up in a home. Why is it dumb to say that you should do that but it's not dumb to say that society should pay for it to be done? Put your money where your mouth is and go help some of these people out. You wont because you know the vast majority of them are shit people who aren't just down on their luck due to layoffs or whatever your propaganda makes you believe in

"Rights" are what we decide they are.

Right now housing isn't considered a "right" in the US or internationally, but we could decide tomorrow that it is. That's how this "society" thing works.

As automation and AI continue to take over the responsibility of creating wealth, we are going to have to start increasing "rights" for the average people, otherwise who in the hell are the robots going to be making stuff for?

I wouldn't go so far as to say housing is a human right just because I don't know how that's achievable. I would probably say that I'd consider access to affordable housing to be a human right.

When the free market puts housing (not home ownership just housing) outside the reach of full time laborers you have functionally arrvied at complete market failure and an early stage of social collapse.

Even as it stands, I think some sort of regulatory correction needs to take place to limit speculation and commercialization of residential housing.

We are the richest country in the world. There are something like an estimated 17 million unoccupied homes in the US and 500,000 homeless. Even if we were to build them small decent housing we could easily do it. Because again. We are the richest country in the history of the world
How are you proposing the current homeless people obtain a house out of the 17 million unoccupied homes in the US?

Just out of curiosity, on average what price range do people here consider affordable housing? Also, what criteria does this house need to meet?

This could be an instance where local government could actually step in without having disastrous consequences. Revisit zoning laws, allow alternative housing such as tiny homes, mobiles or something along those lines. But that's why a criteria of what exactly is expected from affordable housing. I will say you'd be extremely hard pressed to find a 3bdrm 2ba new construction for under 200k out in the middle of nowhere.

in the grand scheme of things, people are just animals. We have no universal rights and are subject to the whims of nature, of which our species comprises just a tiny part.

That being said, we should still strive collectively to create a world where everyone has a roof over their head.

I'd be okay with "shelter" being considered some sort of human right. That could mean a homeless shelter or a government issued tent though, not a house or an apartment. As a taxpayer I don't mind paying for some stuff, like for example healthcare for children, but unconditional income or housing for functional adults, nope not gonna happen. Teach them to fish.

Air BnBs helped put us in this “housing crisis”

Fuck being responsible for housing the the irresponsible homeless population. Theres few that deserve the help. The rest dont want it, they prefer no-rules, do drugs (hard ones), and vandalize tax payers properties. Those dont deserve a free anything.

As far as renters not paying rent is some complete bullshit. Look out your window, hiring signs freaking everywhere, yet with all the free hand outs, nobody needs a job.

I don't know if it should be a right but I think it's in our best interest to find a way to provide it. I mean how the hell do you even get a job if you have no address or phone for them to call you at? No place to sleep or wash your work clothes or even shower?
