Opinion Yeonmi Park is on JRE but her North Korean story is full of many inconsistencies. Is she a grifter?

her story does seems wildly fabricated and she would look a whole look worse of she grew in those 4th world conditions her skin would be messed up.

don't be so sure... of course it's my opinion, but it's informed by pattern recognition. believe what you want... either way, who cares?

You openly said you didn't watch her story because you don't like the podcasts she is on. You formed your opinion because of that. It's nothing to do with her story.
You went in decided and looked for issues with it instead of actually being willing to change your mind about something.

First I will post the JRE video and then post some videos (time marked) which counter a lot of the claims being made.

If you guys don't know who she is, Yeonmi Park is the most famous North Korean defector. She has been on many youtube channels telling her tragic tale of escape. This all sounds like a really sad story but when you do some digging things start to get real fishy.

1. On South Korean television she presents a different self, she and her mother say that they are like the "Paris Hilton" of North Korea. She comes from a wealthy family.

2. She says that she escaped the border into China with both her father and mother. She then later makes a speech and tells a different story. This time she says it was only her mother who crossed the border with her.

3. She makes the claim that she watched a person executed in public for watching a foreign film. Sometimes she says it is James Bond other times a South Korean film. Other North Korean defectors have also said that public executions were stopped several years prior to that date.

I'm sure that North Korea is a really shitty place but is there perhaps a chance that this young lady is being used by political organizations to fearmonger?

What do you guys think? Is she telling the truth or is there an agenda at play here?

Stories about crossing boarding.

On South Korean TV

I wouldn't put it past anyone to lie like that. She's smart and seems to do some good but that doesn't mean she isn't lying through her teeth some of the time. Also, we have to remember that asians have a major issue with "face" meaning they have this concept of honor that we completely don't get in the same way. It's the reason that it's difficult getting anything other than a blank look when they fuck up rather than "oh, I'm sorry". It's also the main reason why china would never admit they fucked up with the virus, forget about it, they have to "save face". So, perhaps the mom feels she has to minimize things to save face and try to say they were rich, but from what I know about N. Korea, no one is rich like we think of it, except for the people in power.

no, her being paraded around on various "shows" says to me as much as i care to hear... the details of whatever she's selling is a different conversation... i probably heard a few minutes of it early on in her campaign and seeing who's engaging and promoting the story leaves me with suspicion...

Reminiscent of Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
As a "person of colour" you can't wander too far from the plantation, without American lefties trying to put you back in your place.

@Zazen is a racist with a habit of expecting non-white people to have only opinions he approves of. Yes, it's a habit now.

Notice how forgiving people on one side of the aisle are when a supposed victim of sexual harassment only comes out 20 years after the fact, with a story that makes no sense.
But somehow, spending your life in the closest thing to hell on Earth doesn't warrant any leeway if your recollection of events isn't up to the standards of coddled little Western soyboys.

I’ve heard recounts of the same events from the Nazi Holocaust survivors in which key details change at different times. It happens when you survive traumatic events. Nothing really to see

you fucking clowns make me sick. Attacking this poor woman who escaped hell because she doesn't agree with your worldview ?? absolute pussies lol

You dumb commies must be winning if you can't even defect from North Korea without being scrutinized.

I haven't listened to anything shes said, mainly because of the platforms she's a guest on and I can tell there's something going on with her message. Why she's shown up all of a sudden, I'm not sure...

hilariously weak, scared of what a little women from Korea says. This is a very pathetic take you have, your tail is between your legs thats how you look. " I know im not supposed to like her, shall I find out why ?? nope thinking for myself is what grifters do"

I listened to that and felt like she was tying to remember her stories as she was telling them to the Tall Man Joe Rogan.

It's kinda a pet peeve of mine when I hear anyone contradict themselves, and it's fairly common, Little Richard's drummer just died and I thought of how he has two different stories of how he met his wife with some variations, nothing wild but just a bit different and it's a helluva story. Johnny Cash also tells a story in his book of how he climbed into a cave and wanted to die, prayed to god and changed his ways, except the time frame he says it happened, the cave was underwater and not only that, it wasn't at that point that he cleaned up. I recently saw Keith Richards' netflix docu and he gives an account of A chuck berry altercation that is different than the one he gave in a Berry Docu 35 years ago. Maybe people's memory's change or maybe there is intentional changing of the story for whatever reason but it bothers me. Nothing particularly unusual though. This Yeonmi? Maybe she's just trying to do some good and figures that whatever she says justifies the means, that's a charitable view. Either way, I don't think people lying is all that unusual.

Good god you're pathetic.

Like a kid plugging his ears "I can't hear you! Prove it! Prove it!"

Well, I mean, most of us had no idea who she was previous to this thread being made. TS shared some inconsistencies and we commented. I don’t think her escape is fake. Her views seem contrived though. Columbia was like NK? Yeah, okay.

Well, she could move to another country if she thinks the USA is as bad as North Korea.

That sounds partisan?

Ilhan Omar could also move if the USA is really that bad.

USA is an amazing place to live.
Park and Omar are selling things to make a living.

one of us could be pathetic... is it weak to neither care what Joe Rogan wants us to consume or Tim whatever the fuck his name is? Is this woman's pitch the trigger that makes us care about North Korea like we didn't care before? don't be a simpleton, don't be afraid... and if you're unable to comprehend perspective and context then don't reply to my posts.

Don't be a simpleton and don't be afraid to watch someone speak before making up a opinion.....

If you're unable to actually view something to have a knowledgeable perspective on it, maybe it you who has very little perspective and context?

I said nothing of the content of her story... i'm afraid of nothing...

What she was saying is corroborated by other sources, her publisher did their due diligence speaking to others who escaped with her so as to ensure the story was factual enough to avoid being sued.

The only three reasons I can believe people might publicly disbelieve her story are:

1 they are useful idiots for China

2 they are woke and dislike her lack of lip service to their ideology

3 they are edgelords.

Memory is constructive, meaning every time you remember something you are rewriting the memory off of a skeleton of data points. This all shifts with time, eyewitness testimony is known to be almost entirely unreliable.

It's entirely known and understood. Whole courses are taught on the subject in psychology.

If you're afraid of nothing you're a fool. But you come across like someone who says a book is shit because you looked at the cover.. or because of who published it.
