Jaime Munguia didn’t have to look far in search of his next challenger once he realized a title fight wasn’t next in store.

Talks continue to progress for a potential fall crossroads bout between Tijuana’s Munguia (37-0, 30KOs) and Philadelphia’s Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15KOs), representatives from both camps confirmed to BoxingScene.com. Such a bout would take place at middleweight, where Munguia—a former junior middleweight titlist—remains the number-one contender to both the WBC and WBO titles.

The building blocks for such a fight began in June, when both appeared and scored knockout wins on the same DAZN show this past June 19 in El Paso, Texas. Munguia stopped former title challenger Kamil Szeremeta (21-2, 5KOs) after six rounds in the evening’s main event. Stealing the show that night, Rosado flattened previously unbeaten Bektemir ‘Bek Bully’ Melikuziev (7-1, 6KOs) inside of three rounds in their super middleweight affair, having survived a first-round knockdown to produce what remains a leading candidate for 2021 Knockout of the Year.

Rosado is a game fighter, but Muniga needs to step up his level of competition. I don't think he's in the same class as the top middleweights, but he needs to test himself more. I think a guy like Derevyanchenko would be a good test. Someone like a Charlo or GGG would KO Muniga because he's sloppy and has bad defense. No doubt about his power at all, but that's not enough to make you the best.

I actually think they were trying to move Munguia too fast a few fights back. Rosado is probably the sort of guy he should be fighting right now, I think his team realizes it.

There's got to be some level between Rosado and the very best though. This fight doesn't prove much, and if Munguia somehow loses it's pretty disastrous. I know Munguia is young still, but I do think he needs to start making some moves soon. If you watched the Hogan fight it's one where I think Munguia lost and a bigger puncher would have knocked him out. Do you put a lot of stock in Gabe's recent win and close fight with Danny Jacobs? He looks rejuvenated but it's super rare for a guy his age to get better.

Maybe I just want to see him step up and lose. For whatever reason I'm just not a big fan, and I think that the GGG matchup that was rumored would have been an absolute disaster. GGG is past his prime but he smokes Munguia early. We will see what happens in this one, if he loses to Rosado the hype train will die down.

I hope Rosado doesn't get to regret all the punishment he took at some point.

I dont mind this fight, 50/50 fight to me

Beating Ali was a blessing and a curse for Munguia and Rosado is a solid test for anyone and will take any fight for the sake of getting paid

Been some time since Rosado moved up to 168. Don't know how he'll feel at MW.

I hate to say it, dont want to be disrespectful to Rosado, but this is actually a good gatekeeper fight.

You're right though, and it's crazy because even though Mung should/will be the heavy favourite here, he leaves such big openings in his defense that anyone with power has shot against him.

I'm going to make it clear i'm joking before i say this but if Gabe beats Mung...

BRING ON CANELO!

I would have liked to see a fight with Eubank jr. This seems like low hanging fruit for someone who is 37-0.

Also why can't a fight between him and Andrade get made since he is always complaining no one will fight him.

Has the makings of a damn good fight as long as everyone has time for a full camp & they come in healthy. I don't think Rosado will have too much trouble with making 160 as he was floating between middleweight & super-middleweight quite a bit until two years ago. Since then, all three of his fights have been at '68 but he's not a big super-middleweight. And he doesn't blow up in between fights either so I think he makes '60 fine.

And as long as Gabe can keep from getting busted up around the eyes too early, he should have a fair shot at an upset. Munguia is there to be hit all night long so as long as Rosado lets his hands go he'll be in the fight.

I like Rosado but I hope Munguia gives him a beating.
