Gordon Ryan vs Felipe Pena

Its Amazing the amount of "men" who value a fucking grappling match and "professionalism" for a fucking game, more than the death of a human being. And im talking about more than flo. People in this thread are disgusting comparing a human dying to eating burnt toast. Just gross. If i didnt have a daughter id be praying for an asteroid. This match brought out the worst in people.

It was annoying when Gordon compared his father's death to what Felipe was going through, it's not even the same thing. Dying of natural causes and being murdered in your prime, are two different things.

Sometimes life dumps a pile of shit on people, and there are no directions you can crawl that don't have shit, just some with less shit than others. The situation is noone's fault, except the craven shooter in the first place. It was too late to cancel the match, so it went ahead. That's just what it is. It's something that happened, and one way or another no good purpose is served trying to get one's gorge up and dump on other people over it either.

I think it's unfair to try to put it on a spectrum from our eyes as complete outsiders. We're not one to decide for another person what another human being means to them.

We can state our opinion of it, but we shouldn't say that Gordon's dad passing away affected Gordon any more or less than Leandro's to Felipe. Heck without being to fully gauge the effects with Felipe himself, Gordon shouldn't really do it either

I wouldn’t try to place someone else’s sorrow on a scale, but it’s childish Gordon who said that Felipe is a mental midget for claiming Lo’s death affected him and used the death of his own dad as proof that the rest of the world are weaklings if they can’t just hop back on the saddle when business calls.

Worse than childish, I think.

There are different ways of handling grief; sometimes, throwing themselves into an effort is precisely how someone does it. This is an often poorly covered topic in popular discourse, where there tends to be a preoccupation with morbidity - or almost a lionization of it even, as if you are supposed to react that way, and something wrong with you if you don't - but there are still some good voices that talk about the subject, eg https://www.amazon.com/dp/0965464946 .

What did he say that's wrong?

I'm kind of a Gordon fanboy, so I'm probably biased, and I get he is an arrogant prick, but he's usually pretty logical IMO.
to be entirely fair, i didn't watch the whole thing.

i couldn't continue when he said that leandro being shot maybe messed with pena's head, but he had a flu when they first fought and nobody cared. i'm sure he has lots of logical arguments afterwards, but consider this one for a moment.

yeah, maybe his friend got murdered an hour before our match, but i had a flu 5 years ago!!!

who the fuck thinks like that? i know a 9 year old that's more mature than that.

right, and gordon using his own experience to belittle others' is classless and insensitive, but unfortunately on par with what we've come to expect from him.

imagine if he took the mic after the match and said "this was the toughest challenge in years, pena is a stylistically difficult match up for me. also, long live the memory of leandro lo!" and didn't post some self centered bullshit about his trials and tribulations the next day. nobody is expecting him to deliver a MLK speech about the future, but he's such a fucking baby he can't string together 2 sentences without portraying himself as some martyr while at the same time claiming he's the most successful, talented, richest, best looking motherfucker to ever grace the face of the earth.

how anyone listens to this prick and gets inspired is beyond me.

The fallout from this match is exactly as I expected it to be when I saw the result.

Agreed. Pretty much what I said. It's not really anyone's place but Felipe Pena, IMO. In the heat of battle, I'd kinda let it slide for Gordon but you would hope, in hindsight, there's some regret on his part.

Even if Felipe was feeling compromised, and it's understandable if someone would be emotionally affected by Lo's tragedy (i know i was)... in the end that's still his responsibility as a competitor. Resiliency, mental game, ability to react constructively to adversity, et cetera et cetera, is all just as much a factor in success as anything and everything else. It doesn't count as a 'pass' any more than having less balance, coordination, strength, endurance, flexibility, or any other quality than your opponent would count as a 'pass' for your opponent beating you (yes, that means you too Ms. Biles).

Noone ever competes while at some hypothetical idealized point in history where all the stars are in alignment for them, you are always competing 'on any given sunday'; and thus likewise, ability to maintain readiness for any given sunday is the often true test of all time greatness.

The least he could have done is play through to the end and not embarrass himself on the mic afterwards trying to asscover, and just own it.

We wouldn't lionised the guy if he got the W. He couldn't overcome the hurdles. Whether he should have gone other there is for him to decide. I didn't think Jake Shields should have gone out and fought a week or so after his father passed away as I thought it might've been a step too soon and fast, but I don't know the guy and he could've been one of the ones that pushed through. I respect his decision.

Simone Biles made the same decision in the other direction and I respect that too. She wasn't right and arguably made the harder choice given the potential fallout. Other thing I don't think people consider is that if she messes up, it's her neck that break and she's the one that lives with it for the rest of her life.

Re: getting on the mic after. I didn't hear it myself. I'd just think the guy just really didn't want to be there at all or anymore. Probably smarter to just walk away but I guess he's obligated to get on the stick. I saw some discussion in previous pages about how Pena could've come out "winning".... The only way he could have come out ahead last night was to win the match. It was as simple as that. There was no way even if he went out on his sword he could have come out ahead, IMO.

It sure as hell looked like they had made an arrangement of some kind because Peña really looked like he was expecting to walk off after 25-30 minutes, from what I saw, he looked like he was expecting to be able to stop the match. Maybe the rumor is just a rumor, Flograppling sure as hell won’t admit to basically forcing Peña onto the mat and using his purse as leverage if the rumor is really a truth, something Flograppling wouldn’t want getting out.

It probably was used as a form of leverage. He is a professional sportsperson... so in general, no show = no pay

Tackett has clarified that statement by the way if you go on his instagram.

Felipe wanted a 30 minute, no sub means draw.
Gordon said No
They fought and Felipe Quit- there was no agreement

Felipe has since confirmed this on his own personnel instagram,

Has Gordon ever expressed interest in MMA?

He might be the no gi GOAT, but he strikes me as the sort of man child that would shite himself if punched in the mouth

I really like and respect you but to say it was too late to cancel is false. Would the world end if the match didnt happen? People on reddit suggested bumping lovato jr to face gordon and rescheduling. It was completely 100% possible to cancel the match. Lost money is why it wasnt. I love grappling of all kinds. Before my wife wrestling was the deepest love in my entire life so it means a lot to me and that match should have been canceled. ESPECIALLY if a grieving participant made the request. Im not getting off on telling people they are nasty, i am heartbroken so many souls have completely lost their way and have their values fucked up beyond repair.

Did Pena ask flo to reschedule and they told him 30 mins at minimum? Was that part true? The most important part of the story to me is wether or not he asked to postpone so he could mourn and then flos response.

Seems like most people here are glossing over the most important question of the story. Did Pena really leverage Leandro's death to try to get Flo to pay him more money than the contract, the day of the match? If that really happened, as Gordon said it did, that's the part I don't see how anyone could possibly justify, that is just awful scumbaggery if true.
