Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira apparently had the opportunity for an immediate rematch against Islam Makhachev at UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro. While the fight may still happen in the not too distant future, it won’t be quite that soon. According to the Brazilian’s manager and coach Diego Lima, the UFC had offered them the booking for the January 21st date, but the team decided to give ‘Do Bronx’ a break instead.

In an interview with Super Lutas, Lima explained that Oliveira was already under too much mental stress after his disappointing UFC 280 loss. In his opinion, to put the 33-year-old in a training camp to fight the new champ again in just two months time would not have been the most intelligent move, so they chose not to take the opportunity.

“When we were going to face Makhachev,” Lima explained, “we showed a lot of interest in fighting him in Rio. One week after [UFC 280], the UFC got in touch with us. They gave us the opportunity to fight [Makhachev] in Rio. They have always been really good to us. We have really good talks. It was up to us to accept or not,”

“I talked it over with Charles. He’s not injured, but there’s an emotional stress. It’s way beyond physical. Charles is the only fighter that has faced all the top 5 guys within a year. Champs normally hide, they want to fight once a year. That’s not Charles, but Rio is way too close now. We prefer to give Charles a well-deserved vacation.”

An instant rematch? For Oliveira? What a joke. The UFC should just put a bullet between Beneil Dariush's eyes at this point.
This too.

Beneil's post fight ints dont exactly help the situation. Here's a guy who basically let a FW barge in and take it,and finally had the space to talk about it,and basically put an even bigger space between him and the UFC wanting to make this fight.

So instead of talking about Christianity he should have talked about Islam

The headline sounds bad. But when put in the context of his previous fight schedule, it’s understandable. They probably want more time to try and figure this puzzle out as well.

He should have talked about getting the fuckin belt, not bein a weirdo fuckin hippie.

If he made a strong play for the belt,it could have generated interest. Instead he seems to not care all that much. He put on a great performance,a hard battle, and instead of captializing on the oppurtunity,he instead alienated himself further. Like, personality wise,he has absolutley nothing going for him. Its like in the negative lol

Like if Khabib was getting shafted for a title shot, and he didnt address it and just went on about islam in like...salt lake city or some shit,it would be the same fail.

I like Oli, but an immediate rematch really doesn't make sense for this one.
I'm glad he rejected it since that's way too soon to come back considering how active he's been, he needs some time off to help recollect himself before going on another run.

This is also a massive asshole move towards Beneil from the UFC, he was willing to fight on this exact card but he didn't hear anything being offered to him about an Islam fight even though he's the next guy in line.
