SUMO - 2023 Natsu Basho (May 14th - 28th)

Meisei deserves an Oscar for his performance today in the movie "I'll totally do my best against the princeling that needs the win"
Hoshoryu ends in force against a future ozeki.
And Terunofuji again, god i hope we will have him around for a couple more years at least, knees holding.

I know this is weird but i'm gonna say it anyway... Otani in Makushita, he started this basho without a top knot but he had one in his match today, also he started this basho super hairy (i know, weird) but he's finished the basho as a smooth guy. Never seen someone's appearance change during the basho.

Looking forward to seeing more of Onosato in July.

Awesome basho from Atamifuji, finishing at 13-2.

Gonoyama's tachiai is so explosive, completely caught Ochiai off guard. Great basho from both. Atamifuji the only guy to beat Gonoyama this basho.

I didn't even realize but Nishikigi was 1-6, and he finished 9-6 after winning 8 straight in week 2. His 8 wins in a row weren't against the lower guys either... he beat Waka bro, Takakeisho, Mitakeumi, Hokutofuji, Kotonowaka, Shodai, Abi, and Onosho. What a basho he's had.

Poor Waka got bullied today by Daieisho.

Hoshoryu dumps Kiribayama, and keeps his slim chance of an Ozeki run alive.

Going down/retired
Ichinojo
Ichiyamamoto (4-11) - M15
Mitoryu (5-10) - M16

Going up
Gonoyama (14-1 + Yusho) - J1
Shonannoumi (11-4) - J1
Bushozan (10-5) - J3

Unless they send Aoiyama down (which they won't) then i don't see Ochiai going up. I think Kagayaki beating Hokuseiho today saved him from demotion and prevented Ochiai from replacing him. Oh well, Ochiai and Atamifuji will be J1 at worse next basho.

Special Prizes
Shukun-Sho (Outstanding Performance) Meisei (really? An 8-7 is outstanding?)

No Kanto-Sho awarded

Gino-sho (Technique) Kiribayama and Wakamotoharu

To give Meisei the outstanding performance but not Midori last basho is a travesty.

Though, for Meisei, his first half of the basho was the basho of his life

Waka deserved technique though if only for his performance against Hokusheio.

Hokusheio losing to Kagayaki is absolutely depressing.
This man's brand of Sumo is just a turtle pushing a lawnmower
I'm a day behind but I truly believe this turtle is going to push that lawnmower all the way to yokozuna. He looked in bad condition the second week and a couple of his opponents figured out his sideways stance leaves him vulnerable to sotogake but I believe he will make the needed adjustments.
