Volk's grappling has been his primary focus in terms of improvement during camp for the past several years. He is demonstrably harder to bully now that he's put on the extra weight, too. I think he's live here, though by that same token Almeida hopefully learned a thing or two and it's not like...
Very winnable fight for my boy Durden IMO. Carlos is competent albeit unremarkable across the board and has a history of getting out-grappled in spots. His best hope is to stuff Durden's takedowns early, win the scrambles, and drain Cody's gas tank before winning the striking battle on the basis...
I think Medic takes this. Means is the poster child of "crafty old veteran". He has a lot of tricks up his sleeves and has a fairly well-rounded game, being at least generally competent everywhere the fight goes. The highlight of his game is probably his boxing, though -- particularly his dirty...
I really wanted to see how he would do against one of the mediocre brawlers at 185: Marquez, Tiuliulin, Ribeiro, etc.
But yeah, other than that... no real loss.
Not to mention Bonfim is undersized and historically prone to getting bullied and out-grappled in the bouts he loses. I think Pichel is a winnable fight for him, but not on the basis of him tossing around the poor old man.
Woodson is hard to get a read on. He over-performed slightly against Jourdain, looked profoundly unexceptional against what should have been a lay-up in Buzukja, and got killed three times in one fight against Saldana. Other times he's looked great. Caceres is a perennial gatekeeper to the Top...
I don't really dislike this matchmaking all that much. They clearly want to try and fast-track Despaigne a bit and I think with the loss to de Lima and the stinker against Arlovski, Waldo has lost whatever favor he once held with the matchmakers. They thought they were bringing in some...
What Dulgarian was doing to C-Rod in Round 1 was more than just empty control. It more than meets the standard of a 10-8 per the modern Unified Rules, where at their most basic the only requirement is that one fighter wins the round "by a large margin".
You sort of were, though, at least IMO. Control time and volume stats require context which is what I'm saying. I already said Rounds 1 and 3 were 100% a 10-8.
I would argue that the volume was discernibly higher in favor of Rodriguez, just not by a huge margin. He also landed the hardest shot...
@fortheo
How do you feel about this fight as a Martinez fan? I think it will be an interesting dynamic seeing Jose Aldo on the other side of the calf kick equation again. He sort of got away from his most (in)famous weapon toward the end of his career, but he did also face a few prolific...
Control time, in and of itself, does not score unless you're going all the way to tertiary scoring criteria. Neither does looking at volume stats on a page in a vacuum in C-Rod's case.
The question is one of Effective Striking/Grappling and the Impactful results of what each athlete was doing...
Both guys had obvious 10-8s. Dulgarian in Round 1 and C-Rod in Round 3. If you think otherwise, then reread the scoring criteria.
The fight really does come down to how you score Round 2. I feel Dulgarian did just enough to edge it, but I am open to arguments that he wasn't sufficiently active...
Costa is a pullout merchant and already fulfilled his "one fight per decade" quota. Imavov or Hermansson are more likely to show up, but all three of those men would constitute fighting backwards for Brendan whereas Marvin represents a chance to slide into the Top 5. Allen had to defend his...
I wouldn't say there's no similarity. They're both big dudes who got signed directly to the UFC on the back of a KO'ing a bunch of absolute cans inside the first round. Neither had/have much tape to be able to discern anything meaningful about their complete MMA game coming into their debut...
He is absolutely being brought in as a sacrificial lamb, but it's hard to have a ton of faith in Robelis like some seem to. The guy is the epitome of unproven. We don't know if he can stuff a takedown. We don't know if he will panic if he gets put on his back or make dumb mistakes. We don't know...
Exactly where I stand. I think Almeida was better off at 205 and I think there are dudes at Heavyweight who are tough match-ups for him. Blaydes is one of them... at least on paper. I also like the way Curtis has done his preparation for Jailton. Nicky Rod is the ideal guy to simulate Almeida...
Weird fight. Gall massively overperformed against Jordan Williams and had... moments against Morono, but mostly looked bad in the latter fight. The rest of his ups and downs are pretty well established... getting schooled by Mike Perry (even in the wrestling department), dominating Northcutt...
