Both were at the top of their game. MJ released his most anticipating album since Thriller and George released his debut solo album at the end of 1987. Both went dominate the year 1988. MJ got 5 no.1s singles on chart while George got 4 no.1s and no.2 and no.5 on that year. According to Billboard, George outsold MJ in US but MJ was huge on the rest of the world. Who was bigger star and which one do you prefer?

George’s voice was velvet. Careless Whispers is one of the greatest tunes ever released.

George had a solid year or 2 at best whereas MJ was the 80s. Nobody was bigger and this was the decade of the megastar.

Year or two at best? That would be the Faith album alone and would completely ignore the Wham era (singles charted continuously from 1982 to 1986).

MJ's too chaotic. GM's got more range like Desafinado, You Have Been Loved, Freedom, Strangest Thing.

Youre correct, however my perspective doesn't change too much. Whams 2nd album was the good one along with George solo album Faith. As good as the Wham album was though, it eventually got drowned out. Simply by the amount of other incredible albums which were also released around the same time.

It wasn't until he released faith that he was considered music royalty. That album was massive and gave him his thriller or purple rain moment. That's the one that got him massive acclaim and super stardom, awards, all the critical glory. Wham was successful, yes, but Faith made Michaels a legend. That's why I was saying, for 1 or 2 years, that was the album everyone was listening to religiously. That just about every critic was deeming a classic.

George Micheal was huge, but MJ was in his own stratosphere. He was like The Beatles or Elvis for a while, in that he couldn't go out in public even with security. Vocally, George was superior for sure, but Michael was such a performer back then. His brothers wanted to tour but no company would support it. Michael decided to join in and the sponsors came running. He was in his own orbit for a while.

Pretty sure George Michael would say Michael Jackson.

George Michael wins by not being a child predator

George Michael IMO. Didn’t mind off the wall by MJ but that’s about it.
