International Australia to Buy Nuclear Attack Submarine from US; France Furious Over Betrayal

thats nice and pretty, but besides the point. you think these two enjoy being left out of a security agreement over the pacific? which is what happened.
Hardly besides the point, that's exactly what the Quad is doing as part of their ongoing security commitments in the region.
The sub deal is primarily a technology sharing agreement. That's why the UK is involved. It's not like the Japanese expected us to switch back from French subs to Japanese subs and they don't want foreign designs, although no doubt they'll commiserate with the French on being similarly dropped.
India has pursued Russian technology.

the quad functions as a toold around which to build. it has been inactive for most of its existence and the spectrum it envisioned included europe, especially france. now that's done for. and quad without india and japan is not exactly functioning properly. maybe it's why the new framework was sent out. to minimize the signal this latest agreement sends is to do so at your own peril. this wasn't just a submarine deal.

That's because the Quad is an alliance and a discussion forum, not a security arrangement involving the sale and supply of weapons or military hosting. The expansion of the Japanese fleet was a result of that discussion.
It's not like the Quad superseded ANZUS, or AUKUS now supersedes the Quad. The leaders are meeting in person to further discuss their ongoing role this week.

the way this aukus deal was designed and implemented actually downgraded cooperation in the pacific against china. and they will build on it.

We both know if this Sub deal had been concluded under Trump, he would tooting Trump's horn, claiming how America is winning under Trump. Since it's Biden, he makes this situation out to be a negative.

Yea and we all know if it was Trump who did it a lot of you guys would be against it.... and it would be viewed as a negative.

Your teams are literally 2 sides of the same coin. No fucking difference at all.

Hardly. It's a massive increase in both the Australian and US regional commitment and introduces the direct involvement of the UK in their largest foreign policy announcement post Brexit. They will be stationing patrol vessels in the Indo-pacific for at least the next 5 years.

Not really, you were downplaying the strategic importance and saying it was all PR for the home audiences.
This is basically "Pivot to Asia 2.0", although of course it remains to be seen if the US has learnt from the Obama administrations failures.

i hope you are right, for everybody's sake.

Well Bidens been talking about it all year, and this is the first decisive step we've seen. I have to assume there's a lot more to come, so we'll see what this weeks Quad meeting bears. I'm not expecting an expansion of a direct trade confrontation, or Trump style transactional diplomacy. There definitely needs to be a trade aspect to this though, a follow up on the failed TPP. I will expect Biden to appear at ASEAN next month.

I wonder who Australia is thinking they might attack with their nuclear attack submarine...

For anyone not familiar, this is from an Australian comedy show called Utopia. It's a few years old, but seemed a little pertinent.

It took you 2.6 trillions, tens of thousands dead or wounded, and 20 years just to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.

Bases in Afghanistan: Taken by Taliban
Schools and infrastructure: Taliban owns them now and women are barred from any public life.
Train and equip the ANA to be able to defend the country: Rekted by Taliban in 11 days with weapons falling to their hands
Kill Bin Laden: Achieved, but that vacuum has long been filled. ISIS-K and Al-Qaeda are stronger there than ever before

You had to beg the Taliban to hold off just to let your evacuation flights take off from Kabul. When ISIS-K killed 13 American troops as parting gift, all you could do to retaliate to was bombing an friendly interpreter's family. You ran with your tail between your legs.

What did you accomplish exactly?
Um , the United States lost just over 2000 services members while estimates put Taliban casualties around 58,000. The us military stopped conducting combat operations a few years ago .How did the Taliban defeat the United States military , again?

Because there back in power, it was a long game that no-one besides the Taliban was willing to play.

Ofcourse they would welcome any effort to keep China in check, as those efforts can surely compliments each other.

WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) - At a meeting of the Quad group of countries on Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga welcomed the establishment last week of a trilateral partnership to provide Australia with nuclear submarines, a Japanese government official said.

Asked whether the new AUKUS partnership between Australia, Britain and the United States was discussed at the meeting of the leaders of Australia, India, Japan and the United States in Washington, Japan's foreign press secretary, Tomoyuki Yoshida, told reporters: "Prime Minister Suga welcomed the initiative of the establishment of the security partnership forged by the three countries ... which is taking an important role for the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region."

Japan was never a bad ally but I really appreciate the active role they are playing, it is their neighborhood after all.
