I hate to shit in your laundry, but it's a dictatorship and people who try to "rise up" were killed or imprisoned. Do you think maybe that had something to do with it? Did that brilliant professor or Bernie give no consideration to how many have fled? Cuba only has a population of 11 million, and there are 1.2 million exiles living in the US. Did they float over here on homemade rafts just to let us all know what a great job Castro was doing?

Cuba already had an 80% literacy rate before Castro, and literacy doesn't do you much good if you're only allowed to read propaganda and you can't use your education to get out of poverty. Nearly every other latin american country has made more educational progress than Cuba, and they didn't need to create a slave state to do it.

I know an older Cuban guy and he said more or less the same thing, praised Castro for expanding education in particular.

I am not going to pretend one anecdote from a random Cuban guy is definitive proof that Castro is a great guy. I think age is a factor, guys like the one I know that are very old remember the days before the revolution and how shit Cuba was then are likely more sympathetic to Castro. Nowadays there are generations of Cubans who only know the stagnation that resulted from the Revolution and are understandably resentful.
