But I thought effective change was happening leftists? What happened to the 50k I was promised off my loans?

Biden on cancelling $50,000 in student debt: 'I will not make that happen'

"I will not make that happen," Biden said during a CNN town hall on Tuesday night when asked if he would support cancellation of $50,000, adding that it "depends on whether or not you go to a private or public university" and that he’s opposed to saying that he was going to “forgive the debt, billions of dollars of debt, for people who have gone to Harvard and Yale and Penn.”

Huh?

How is he back peddling? He never said he was going to cancel $50,000.

His plan that he released before the election included canceling $10,000 in student loan debt. $50k was proposed by House Democrats and Joe never came on board.

He said in December that he wouldn't erase $50k

FFS, it's impossible to actually talk about policy with you dopes when you're openly dishonest.

Isn't it also only $10,000 for undergrad public schools?

Joe Biden in 2022: "We're going to reduce emissions by 15% by 2024."

Republican morons in 2023: "Ohhhh, Joe Biden just flip flopped and said he's not going to replace all oil rigs with hamster wheels after all. Must hurt, libs! So much for going green!"

He did say immediate and $2000 so...... I can GET the argument around $1400 to bring the down payment of $600 up to $2000 but immediate... we're near a month in LET'S GO

I don't remember that stipulation, but I'd believe it. It was pretty bare bones and actually went backward on PSLF.
I think I remember looking into it a little cause I have a little over 20k in student loan debt but that I likely wouldn't qualify for help as mine is post-grad for a fucking for profit shithole school.

Well, I guess this thread is done.

I'm okay with it, even as someone that still owes money

But if he sticks even with the interest forbearance permanently, I'll be happy.

"I understand the impact of the debt and it can be debilitating," Biden added. "But I do think that in this moment of economic pain and strain, that we should be eliminating interest on the debts."

At the risk of being yelled at...

The fact that so many loans are through the Feds and they charge you interest is a goddamn joke.

Tax your income (in some States twice), tax your purchases... and oh you want to go to school but can't afford it or qualify for some grants? Take a loan out and we get to rake you over the coals on interest rates!

Remove interest rates from Federal student loans. Fucking dipshit fuckface assholes.

Eliminating the interest would be such a win. And no bitching. People still paid back what they borrowed. Government just didn’t make a profit off them.

My loans would have been paid back years ago if it weren't for compounding interest. On a private mortgage it's one thing.. for a government loan for school it's nonsense.

Especially if it's a government loan to go to a public school which gets government funds...

If a private company did this sorta shit and had an Italian last name they'd be brought up on fraud charges.

While I stand by my last post, I also agree with this.

I know I've mentioned this a few times in previous SL threads.. but I have no issue paying back all of the money I borrowed and everyone should be expected to.

The other thing is, while it sounds all warm and fuzzy to cancel $10k or $50k or all SL debt or whatever... it doesn't change the fact that tuition costs have gotten out of control and will continue to as long as the feds and private banks are willing to constantly increase the amount borrowed. Real simple cause and effect here. They really need to fix the whole system now or forgiving debt one time wont make a difference.

If people are residents of a certain state and pay taxes in that state, they shouldn't have to pay to go to a public university. (Non-residents should understandably pay). If you want to go to private school, you should have to pay.

New Mexico is working toward that now. If the state cant allocate the necessary money to fund the school, then the feds can help.

it should be no shocker for those who has even paid half ass attention to Biden's political career.
He is a blue Dog Dem, not one of those socialist weirdos.
