Clapton is arguebly technically better but post Derek and the Dominos much less interesting for me.

Hard to say, to me they are different styles. Comfortably Numb and Layla are both great but for totally different reasons.

Different styles. Neither could really take the other’s place in a band or on a project. They are each amazing at the style they play. If I had to choose, I’d say Clapton is better.

In terms of guitar playing, Layla’s most memorable moments came from Duane.

Clapton the more accomplished and revered.
Still, I would rather listen to Gilmour. His music means more to me.

Gilmour could chew it up pretty well when he wanted to as well.

Extended solo from part 8 of Shine On from the show Waters spat on the fan.

Clapton Unplugged, and some select work from the 70s (Dear Mr. Fantasy). Overall, Gilmour's run in Pink Floyd: DSOTM, Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall is pretty damn awesome.

    I guess Gilmour

I'm sure the argument could be made that Clapton is a better technical guitarist, but my choice is David Gilmour.

Gilmour. It isn't even close. And, I like Clapton, but he peaked early and has a rather narrow style which lacks depth. Sure, Clapton plays faster, but that is only because Gilmour doesn't want to play that style.

Next time you listen to it you will 100% hear Duane. As soon as someone points it out you can't unhear it.

    Both are blues-based guitarists.

Clapton is God. He's a helluva guitar player. He's had some of the most memorable riffs and leads. Great singer, too, for his style.

Gilmore has never missed a note. He plays only what needs to be played. His playing evokes emotions. Truly incredible player and singer.

There truly is no "best" guitarist. A blues guitar player hits you in the feels. Clapton and Gilmore BOTH do that.

Among Clapton vs Gilmore, who do I like best? Clapton. He's a hero of mine. I'd be remiss to say anything derogatory about Gilmore. He's truly gifted, and playing so slow and cleanly as he does takes a lot of skill.

Who is MY favorite? Jimmy Page. But I will freely admit that he isn't technically the best player.
