Game Services & Game Sales thread

You should still be able to get in on this. You just have to load up your Xbox Live Gold subscription to the max amount (which appears to be 3 years = 36 months). So that's $1 for the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. This is a $15/mo value, correct. Thus, for $1, you are procuring $15 x 36 = $540 value of Game Pass service*.
*Edit: Sort of. Keep in mind a substantial part of the value of the "Ultimate" suite is that it includes Xbox Live Gold membership, but to take advantage of this apparent loophole, you are purchasing the Xbox Live Gold Membership.

Notice that the $15/mo service normally wouldn't be the option you would want, @Pliny Pete, because you aren't a PC gamer, unless you were using it to score the Console Game Pass service + your Xbox Live Gold membership at the same lowest sum if you purchased them separately (12-months of Xbox Live Gold --> $60 --> $5/mo + $10/mo Console Game Pass = $15/mo total).

The difference here is the Game Pass Ultimate bundles the Xbox Live Gold membership on a piecemeal monthly basis unlike the above strategy where you have to buy 12-months of Xbox Live Gold in bulk to realize the same combined price.

I haven't confirmed, but I would expect it to work like all the services work now with the "free" games given out on the Playstation Network or Xbox Live Gold; you can only access the games so long as your subscription is active. Otherwise, they will sit dormant and locked on your console with all of your saved data and everything waiting until you re-activate your membership.
It's back on, sort of...

*Edit* The catch:

Just as a footnote to this, that this only applies for first time subscribers IIRC. I had the same promo advertised and thought that was a sweet deal and went to re-up because i just purchased a 12 month Gold card. But when i went to checkout it charged me 3 months for the price of 1. Still not a bad deal so I took it and now I have Game Pass Ultimate until 01/21. But because I already had done the 3 months for a dollar I guess the promo does not apply any more. Instead they offer 3 months for the price of 1.

It appears that it's a more convoluted conversion upgrade "exploit" this time, so if you already have Ultimate, there isn't much to gain. It's only favorable to those who buy Gold, and then use this to convert to Xbox Ultimate which includes Xbox Gold + PC Game Pass + Xbox Game Pass. For this reason it's undoubtedly most attractive to gamers who game on both PC and Xbox One (who not only get both game passes, but can sync gameplay/progress on any of the 75 games in the Play Anywhere library on both platforms, and some of these games are available to play via the Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass services).

Yep it's just not realistic right now with data caps. Comcast starts charging me once I go over 1Tb.
Charter has never charged me nor even sent a notice to me over data caps, btw.

That's AT&T bullshit. Never looked back. Comcast sounds like it sucks, too.

Dec. 3rd Update:
Google Assistant is now available on the Stadia Controller
Well, that's something, I guess. That's not at all what needs to be fixed/improved, but it's something.

Ultimate RED Collection
$87.77
Ultimate CD Projekt Red bundle

GoG's Winter Sale is underway, and the above is perhaps the most desirable sale that i see. This includes the unreleased Cyberpunk 2077; probably the most anticipated title in all of the VG world, right now. Since the value of that is $60 one might perceive the other five Witcher games in that bundle as costing $28 total as a perk for pre-ordering:
  1. Cyberpunk 2077
  2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Game of the Year Edition)
  3. The WItcher 2: Assassins of Kings (Enhanced Edition)
  4. The Witcher (Enhanced Edition)
  5. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
  6. The Witcher Adventure Game
Alternatively, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Game of the Year Edition) is on sale for $14.99 a la carte for the next two days. Historical low.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice for $10.19 is another top title I'm seeing. It's also available on Steam for the same price. Historical low.

A Plague Tale: Innocence, which Valhoven said was fantastic, is half off for $22.49. Historical low.

The RE2 remake is down to 23 bucks on STEAM for the next 18 hours. I'm pretty close to biting.

The Epic Games Store Holiday Sale kicks off with $10 coupons and free games
PC Gamer said:
The Epic Games Store has kicked off its big Holiday Sale 2019 with discounts of up to 75 percent, a $10 coupon that can be rolled into more $10 coupons when used on eligible games, and, as announced last week, the first of 12 free games that will be given out one per day until the end of the month.

The coupon is an interesting twist: It's basically an automatic $10 deduction on your first purchase of $15 or more during the sale, but when you use it on an eligible game (the FAQ states that it can't be applied to pre-purchases, non-game purchases like DLC or season passes, or in-game purchases such as V-Bucks) you'll get another $10 coupon that you can use on another game—and if that one is also eligible, boom, another coupon comes your way. It's basically an across-the-top $10 cut for everyone, but gamified, sort of.

Top sales highlighted by PC Gamer:

I also noticed Far Cry Primal for $6.

Don't miss the 12 days of Christmas giveaway if you're a PC gamer. Epic is giving away a new game every day starting today.

Not sure when it expires, but Amazon had $15 off $100 or more iTunes gift card.

The Steam Winter Sale 2019 has begun

A few ideas to get you started:

Via the top commenter>>> games that are at least 70% off totaling under $10 with an 80%+ Steam user rating:

Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Portal and Portal 2 are all 99 cents a piece.
Bioshock Infinite is $7.49
Mount and Blade Warband is $4.99

***Edit***
Note that you can change the filters with that bottom link. After tweaking I noticed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Game of the Year Edition) is on sale-- matching an all-time low via the GoG-- for $14.99.

Just picked up the Witcher 3 GOTY edition at 70% off on Steam. Already played the main game on PS4 but not the DLC yet. I'm also curious how much different it looks on PC.

BTW, I'd also like to highlight a website that I've noticed has posted the top sales for a huge number of games I've inspected being sold in the major sales from the big boys like Steam, Epic, EA, GoG, and others. It's "Game Billet", who sells game keys, and it's not a Grey Market reseller. The biggest complaint I see is that sometimes their key processing takes a while:

If there are any eso maniacs here, then be sure take a look at this pic here, gonna make your life easier when farming the gold ;)

Best Steam price ever, and that's barely off the historic low from any vendor (Game Billet sale was $4.77 once). Hall of Fame title, and this edition includes everything.

Nvidia’s GeForce Now is finally out of beta, challenges Google Stadia at $5 a month
The Verge said:
For the past eight years, Nvidia has been building graphics cards that can stream games over the internet — effectively putting some of the power of a gaming PC inside your less potent Windows laptop, MacBook, or phone. Today, the company’s finally ready to let North America and Europe sign up to pay for its GeForce Now service, starting at $5 a month, while also offering unlimited one-hour free trials that don’t even require a credit card.

The idea might sound familiar if you’ve heard of Google’s Stadia service, Sony’s PlayStation Now, Microsoft’s upcoming xCloud, or even Nvidia’s GeForce Now. (Nvidia’s been in beta for years and years, and also had a false start.) Each service operates on the same basic principle: delivering games much the same way you can stream a YouTube or Netflix video right now.

Unlike Google, Sony, and Microsoft’s offerings, Nvidia has a very different pitch. It’s your existing library of PC games that you can now play anywhere, instead of having to buy new games and / or subscribe to a Netflix-like catalog. Nvidia supports Steam, the Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Uplay, and it runs instances of each for you in the cloud. You can log into your accounts, download many of your existing purchases near-instantly to your cloud desktop, sync your old save games, and pick up where you left off in a couple of minutes at most — no patches necessary.

I’ve been testing out GeForce Now (GFN) on and off for a number of years now, and it’s my favorite cloud gaming service because I can keep playing the games I’ve already been playing on my gaming PC on a weak Windows laptop, MacBook, Shield TV set-top, or Android phone instead. (There’s no iPhone or iPad support planned, but Nvidia says it’ll bring a WebRTC version to Chromebooks towards the end of Q1, which potentially opens the door to web browsers, too.) While the streaming quality isn’t quite as good at Stadia at its best and I wouldn’t recommend it for competitive gaming, I did beat Genichiro in the brutal Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice over a GeForce Now connection.

The primary catch is that you need an excellent internet connection, a capable Wi-Fi router or Ethernet cable, and you must live somewhere that isn’t too far away from Nvidia’s servers to begin with. The company says its nine data centers in North America and six in Europe can reach 80 percent of broadband homes within 20 milliseconds — theoretically speedy enough for games to feel like they’re not lagging behind your button press — and it claims it’s achieving 10ms round-trip latency with its partners in Tokyo, (SoftBank), Seoul (LG U+), and Moscow (GFN.ru), some of which are still in testing. Nvidia’s talking to carriers in the US, too, but there’s nothing to announce yet.

Either way, you’ll need a 15 Mbps connection or better, 30 Mbps for 1080p60 streaming, and 50 Mbps is what Nvidia suggests for the best experience. (There’s no 4K or 1080p120 options yet.)

And though you can bring your own games, you can’t bring all of them. While Nvidia has a substantial list of hundreds of titles, including huge multiplayer hits like Fortnite, DOTA 2, Overwatch, PUBG, Destiny 2, and Rainbow Six Siege, it’s also conspicuously missing top games from Capcom, EA, Konami, Remedy, Rockstar, and Square Enix, even though most of those publishers participated during the beta period. That means no Grand Theft Auto V, Monster Hunter World, or Red Dead Redemption 2, all of which regularly appear in the top ten most-played games on Steam.

Nvidia’s updated website wasn’t live at the time we prepped this story, but you should be able to find the apps either here or here.

Google Stadia review: the best of cloud gaming is still just a beta

Better of those final two download links is here (it gives you direct links to the downloadable files for the four different platforms: Windows, Mac, Android, and finally the most optimized version for the NVIDIA Shield and NVIDIA Shield Pro, specifically, which is an Android device, and the best out-of-the-box HTPC ever made):

IGN's review has been in progress since yesterday, and it isn't complete, but so far they score it a 7/10 on PC/Mac:

This is very cool, but it isn't a service that I can imagine myself using in the near future. I can't think of anytime I would want to game and don't have access to my PC but do have access to a good enough internet connection.

I hope it is a success. The idea of being able to play demanding games on a potato is great.

It's in the same place Stadia is, currently. That's why it originally debuted with the NVIDIA Shield, and is still best optimized for that platform. Like Stadia, it's intended to enable those with lesser hardware ($199 in the case of the Shield) play even the most demanding games that are on the PC platform that would take a far more expensive rig to play adequately. That's why there is the one experimental YouTube video where they build a shoestring $300 PC just so they can access the service.

Since it runs on Android it will also enable you to play on the go with a phone or a tablet. Ideally you would have the MicroUSB-to-HDMI cable to plug it into a TV, but I suppose it could also work the the game pads (the dual-joystick controllers with a "dock" that clamps the phone into place). I'm unclear if the service is compatible with console controllers in the same way PC gaming directly is. Haven't dug that deep.

Mac or Macbook users might find it especially appealing, eventually.

Sounds like Stadia is still currently the leader in terms of microlatency, though, ahead of this service and Microsoft's xCloud.

Either service would be great for Chromebooks as well. A laptop with an insane battery that can play games and is lightweight, count me in.
