Hikaru Utada - One Last Kiss
new self-made music video from Dreamcatcher:
new from Weeekly:
this style of cute, poppy, with a bit of attitude releases is a pretty well-worn path but when it's done well it's fantastic. the chorus here is nuts imo, and it's impressive they were able to work a 6-syllable mouthful like "스케이트보드" (skateboard) in there so well.
a couple of retro-inspired releases from great soloists...
she's new to me, but I really like this from YOUHA (also composed and written by her):
and all-time great IU is back as well:
New title track from God Sejeong.
That rap verse was a bit off-putting, but overall the song is pretty nice.
Yukika back under new management but with the same style:
good to see she's still playing into the retro city pop vibes from her earlier releases. her vocals play off the bass dominating the instrumentals really well here.
new TWICE Japanese release:
think their Japanese releases have come a long way, although I think Better is still... well... better. this is very good as well though, and my only quibble is the background voices are a bit overused and distracting.
BIBI - Life's a Bi...
so many great soloists out there, but BIBI is near the top of a very talented heap. love the song and BIBI owns her chill hip hop style but combines it with sober and earnest messaging. and the MV is great.
speaking of great soloists, Miyu Takeuichi - Can't Take My Eyes off You:
as usual it's a one-woman show for Miyu and she takes an oldie-but-a-goodie and does it in her own city pop style. she recently left her agency in Korea, and while it's disappointing her time in Korea wasn't more fruitful, it sounds like she learned a lot from her time there and got some great songs out of it.
R.I.P. Yeoja Chingu 2015 - 2021
yeah, that was pretty surprising news. RIP GFriend.
No idea why this showed up in my recommendations, but I'm glad it did...
