New Trailer for ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE Featuring Jared Leto's Joker

Bridgerton Breakout Rene-Jean Page Joins Paramount's DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie

Si4Pe2u.jpg

Regé-Jean Page has set his next project after breaking out as the star of Netflix's smash hit Bridgerton. Page has closed a deal for a leading role in Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons feature, joining a cast that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind New Line's sleeper hit Game Night — are set to direct the feature based on the popular fantasy role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

The game of Dungeons & Dragons is known for its war games, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other creatures. The game famously uses multisided dice in gameplay and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master. It is not known whether the movie adaptation will be a straight-up fantasy film, set in the world of the game, or incorporate the storytelling and game-playing aspects.

Page, who is set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend, starred as the beloved Duke of Hastings in the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama that, according to the streamer, was watched by more than 82 million accounts in its first month, making it the service's biggest series ever. His previous feature credits include Mortal Engines and period romance Sylvie's Love.

Good for them for not trying to make her “sympathetic” this time.

If you’re making a prequel about the origin of a villain, then the main character should be a villain protagonist.

If the last couple of decades of TV have thought us anything, is that people love themselves a villain protagonist. Your Tony Sopranos and your Walter Whites and so forth.

Edgar Wright to Direct Stephen King's THE RUNNING MAN for Paramount

Edgar Wright will direct an adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man for Paramount. The 1982 novel follows a man who attempts to win a reality TV game where the only objective is to stay alive. (A 1987 adaptation starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.)

Michael Bacall will pen the screenplay. Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon will produce through his Genre Films banner, alongside Nira Park from Wright’s Complete Fiction banner.

Wright recently screened The Sparks Brothers, a doc that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was about the cult pop group Sparks. He will next release the horror thriller Last Night in Soho via Focus Features.

Game night was surprisingly pretty funny to me. Idk how that'll translate but I'm for sure curious to check this out.

Angel Manuel Soto to Direct Live-Action BLUE BEETLE Movie for Warner Bros.

rpFWFi5.jpg

Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto is set to direct Blue Beetle, DC Films and Warner Bros.’ first superhero movie starring a Latino character, individuals with knowledge of the project exclusively tells TheWrap.

The screenplay is from Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s Scarface remake and Sony’s Miss Bala.

In DC Comics, Blue Beetle is the superhero alter ego used by three different heroes, but the film will focus on Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes, the third character to assume the Blue Beetle mantle.

“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” said Soto in a statement to TheWrap. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”

The film is eyeing a fall production start, with Zev Foreman executive-producing for Warner Bros.

Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner in 2006, Jaime Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive, and grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor which can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.

While DC has had Latino characters in its movie universe, (Jay Hernandez as El Diablo in Suicide Squad, and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya in Birds of Prey), and cast Latina Calle to play Supergirl, this will be the first stand-alone title to feature a Latino lead.

David Fincher and Michael Fassbender Team Up for Assassin Thriller THE KILLER with Se7en and Fight Club Writer

y08ULDG.jpg

David Fincher and Michael Fassbender are teaming up for The Killer, Fincher’s long-gestating assassin drama that may finally go before cameras this year, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Fincher has been associated with Killer since at least 2007, when the project, an adaptation of the French graphic novel, was set up at Paramount. Brad Pitt, who worked with Fincher on several films including Se7en, was even at one point circling to star. The project was put into turnaround and was quietly picked up by Netflix, with the streamer and filmmaker starting from first position.

And while it was a good six years between Fincher’s latest movies, 2014’s Gone Girl and last year’s Mank, sources say this one is moving fast for a September start.

What's more is that the project is being written by Andrew Kevin Walker, the scribe behind Fincher's screen classics Se7en, The Game and Fight Club.

In a deal that is still coming together, Fassbender would star as an assassin who begins to psychologically crack as he develops a conscience, even while his clients continue to demand his skills. The graphic novel, described as hardboiled noir, hailed from writer Alexis Nolent, under the pen name Matz, and artist Luc Jacamon. Representatives for Fassbender did not return requests for comment, although several sources tell THR that talks are underway.

Fassbender last starred in X-Men: Dark Phoenix and recently wrapped Taika Waititi’s inspirational soccer pic, Next Goal Wins.

J.J. Abrams, Ta-Nehisi Coates to Reboot SUPERMAN with Plans to Cast a Black Actor for the Role

YYyMZCT.jpg

After remaining grounded for far too long, Superman is finally ready to fly again. Though this time, when he returns, he’ll be made new once again. Warner Bros. is rebooting Superman with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and producer J.J. Abrams.

On the Abrams front, his involvement doesn’t come as a surprise as the filmmaker has long been rumored to tackle Superman since his production company Bad Robot struck a deal with WarnerMedia. This isn’t the first time Abrams has circled a Superman film – he wrote Superman: Flyby in the early 2000s which was eventually shelved in favor of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006).

As for Coates, the acclaimed author and journalist known for his non-fiction work concerning African-Americans, The Beautiful Struggle, Between the World and Me, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy, carved out a space in the world of superheroes as the ongoing writer of Black Panther and Captain America for Marvel Comics. Together, Coates and Abrams, have the opportunity extend the DCEU’s lens into its ever-growing multiverse.

A Superman reboot comes on the heels of The CW’s recent series, Superman & Lois, the casting of Sasha Calle as Supergirl in The Flash, and Henry Cavill’s upcoming, previously filmed but unreleased, interpretation in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It seems DC’s Kryptonians are once again having their day in Hollywood.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that this new Superman project is aiming to star a Black Superman. It’s possible that this will be another version of Clark Kent, but more intriguing is the possibility that it will be either Calvin Ellis or Val-Zod, Supermen from within DC’s comic book multiverse. Calvin Ellis, created by Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnke first appeared in Final Crisis No. 7 (2009). Inspired by Barack Obama, this iteration of Superman is also President of the United States of America, and uses his superpowers to directly confront global politics, alongside his own iteration of the Justice League that includes Wonder Woman, Nubia. Val-Zod, created by Tom Taylor, Nicola Scott and Robson Rocha, first appeared in Earth 2 No. 19 (2014). The Superman of Earth 2, Val-Zod was adopted by Jor-El, and sent to Earth along with Kal-El. Raised by pacifist parents on Earth, Val became Superman when Darkseid’s forces invaded his planet.

Of course, rebooting Superman raises questions about Henry Cavill’s future in the DCEU, a future that many fans have been keeping their fingers crossed for. Despite rumors of cameos in upcoming DCEU projects, Henry Cavill’s solo Superman sequel never moved forward, despite filmmakers like Christopher McQuarrie expressing interest. With Zack Snyder’s Justice League set to premiere on HBO Max in March, fans are already wondering if it will mark a swan song for Cavill’s tenure, just as it seemed his future might finally be taking shape again.

It’s too soon to count Cavill’s Clark Kent out yet, as Coates and Abrams Superman seems to be something else entirely, an expansion of the mythos rather than a replacement. In the same way that Matt Reeves’ The Batman isn’t preventing Ben Affleck from reprising the role in The Flash, it seems this new Superman movie will ultimately be additive, allowing a range of visionaries to present their own take on these iconic characters all under the limitless potential of the multiverse. If anything, it seems we’ll be getting more Superman rather than less. And with this reboot, there is room to tackle something we’ve never seen onscreen before.

Hugh Grant to Play the Villain in DUNGEONS & DRAGONS; Sophia Lillis Joins the Cast

Paramount and eOne’s untitled Dungeons & Dragons feature project has found its villain. Hugh Grant has been cast in the main antagonist role in the big-budget feature adaptation of the popular fantasy role-playing game from Wizards on the Coast.

At the same time, Sophia Lillis, best known for her work in the It horror movies, has also joined the bold-faced name of the production that also includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Regé-Jean Page.

The game is known for its war games, treasure hunts, camaraderie and reversals of fortune, all in a fantasy setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other creatures. The game famously uses multi-sided dice in gameplay and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master. It is not known whether the story is a straight-up fantasy or incorporates the storytelling and game-playing aspects.

Plot details are being kept under wraps but it is known that Grant will play an antagonist named Forge Fletcher while Lillis' character is named Doric.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind New Line's sleeper hit Game Night — are set to direct with Paramount and eOne jointly producing and financing.

Grant last starred in HBO’s drama The Undoing for which he was highly praised, earning Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics Choice Award nominations. He is currently shooting Five Eyes, an action thriller that once again reunites him with Guy Ritchie, who directed him in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and last year’s crime caper, The Gentlemen.

Lillis broke through starring as Beverly March in New Line’s hit adaptation of Stephen King novel, It. She followed that up with a starring turn in Netflix’s short-lived series, I Am Not Okay With This, and can be currently seen opposite Paul Bettany in road trip movie Uncle Frank on Amazon.
