John Boyega and Joe Cornish Reteaming for ATTACK THE BLOCK Sequel

0BJGq6F.jpg

Ten years later, John Boyega is returning to the cult classic that put him on the map. The actor will reteam with filmmaker Joe Cornish for a sequel to Attack the Block, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Boyega was an unknown actor when he starred in the 2011 film that centered on a ragtag group of friends who find themselves defending their neighborhood from aliens. Boyega went on to worldwide fame several years later in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and he and his director have stoked hopes for a sequel in interviews over the years.

“It’s been a decade since Attack the Block was released and so much has changed since then,” Boyega said in a statement. “I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London. Moses has remained one of my favourite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honour.”

Cornish, who was nominated for a BAFTA for the first film, returns to write, direct and produce. Boyega will also produce via his UpperRoom Productions, alongside Nira Park of Complete Fiction and James Wilson.

“I’m thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of Attack the Block on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release. I can’t wait to work alongside John again, bringing audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action,” said Cornish.

It’s Official: AT&T and Discovery Merge, Creating One of the Largest U.S. Media Companies

GettyImages-1164249554-1.jpg

AT&T and Discovery Inc. have made it official, unveiling their plan to merge their media and entertainment assets in a deal that will bring together TV channels like CNN, TBS, TNT, HGTV, Food Network and Discovery Channel, the Warner Bros. film studio, and streaming services HBO Max and Discovery+.

They said the merger would create a “global leader in entertainment” and “a stronger competitor in global streaming.”

The new company will “compete globally in the fast-growing direct-to-consumer business, bringing compelling content to direct-to-consumer subscribers across its portfolio, including HBO Max and the recently launched Discovery+,” the firms said. “The transaction will combine WarnerMedia’s storied content library of popular and valuable IP with Discovery’s global footprint, trove of local-language content and deep regional expertise across more than 200 countries and territories.”

And they highlighted: “The new company will be able to invest in more original content for its streaming services, enhance the programming options across its global linear pay TV and broadcast channels, and offer more innovative video experiences and consumer choices.”

Under the terms of the deal, WarnerMedia and Discovery will merge through a complex all-stock transaction called a Reverse Morris Trust that would see AT&T receive $43 billion in cash, debt securities, and WarnerMedia’s retention of certain debt, and AT&T’s shareholders would receive stock representing 71 percent of the new company. Wall Street observers said the Reverse Morris Trust bore the mark of major Discovery shareholder and media mogul John Malone, who has a reputation for complex, tax-efficient deals.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav will lead the merged company as CEO, and there is no word about a role for WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar. The companies say the deal will close in 2022, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.

The combined company is expected to have $52 billion in revenue in 2023, and the companies say there will be $3 billion in cost synergies through the combination. AT&T, meanwhile, will focus its efforts on 5G and fiber broadband.

Henry Cavill in Talks to Star in Director Chad Stahelski's HIGHLANDER Reboot for Lionsgate

Filmmaker Chad Stahelski’s long-gestating Highlander reboot is getting a jolt. Henry Cavill is in talks to star in the Lionsgate film, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. It is unknown what character he will play, but it is expected to be one of the film’s two leading roles.

Cavill rose to global fame playing Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel and subsequent DC films. He also has Mission: Impossible – Fallout on his résumé, as well as Netflix’s The Witcher and Enola Holmes.

Stahelski, known for John Wick, has been developing the Highlander reboot since 2016.

“I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school,” Stahelski previously told THR. “Such great themes of immortality, love and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”

The first Highlander, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings who hunted each other down in order to collect more power. Lambert played Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, Connery portrayed Egyptian Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez and Clancy was a barbarian known as the Kurgan. The film is known for the tagline “There can be only one” and spawned four sequels and three television series.

Kerry Williamson is penning the latest draft of the script. Producers on the new Highlander include Neal H. Moritz and Josh Davis. Executive producers include Amanda Lewis, Patrick Wachsberger and Gregory Widen. Peter S. Davis, producer of the original Highlander, helped develop the film before his death in February at age 79.

Timothy Chalamet to Star as Young Willy Wonka in WONKA Musical from Warner Bros.

Timothee-Chalamet-and-Willy-Wonka-Split-Getty-H-2021.jpg

Timothée Chalamet has claimed his golden ticket. After on-and-off again negotiations, the actor has signed to star in Wonka, a big-screen reimagining of Roald Dahl’s classic children book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, being made by Warner Bros.

Paul King, the director of the Paddington movies, will be sitting in the director’s chair when cameras roll in September. David Heyman is producing the feature, which will be a musical.

Wonka is the infamous and eccentric owner of a chocolate factory who figured prominently in Dahl’s 1964 book and its follow-up, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. He was also the caretaker of the Oompa-Loompas, the short humans whom Wonka saved from enemies in Loompaland and now make his candies.

The character became so indelible in culture that the 1971 film adaptation of the book was titled Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Gene Wilder portrayed the character in that pic, while Johnny Depp played him in the 2005 adaptation.

Chalamet channeled Depp as the son of Edward Scissorhands in a Super Bowl ad earlier this year when the first round of negotiations were underway. Those talks fell apart over scheduling but hurdles were overcome and a deal was signed late last week.

Chalamet next leads the ensemble cast for Dune, the epic sci-fi adaptation that will be released this fall.

Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown and Jayma Mays Joins Enchanted Sequel DISENCHANTED as Villains

Two-time Primetime Emmy winner Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown and Jayma Mays are boarding Disenchanted, the Disney+ Enchanted sequel starring Amy Adams, Idina Menzel and James Marsden

Disney Studios’ President of Production Sean Bailey announced the sequel at Disney Investor Day back in December. Adams, Menzel and Marsden are reprising their respective roles of Giselle, Nancy and Prince Edward from the original film, with composer Alan Menken also returning. He said during a JLGB Virtual livestream that Marsden and Menzel would be returning for Disenchanted.

The 2007 live-action movie was a satire on Disney animated princess musicals, a fish-out-of-water tale about a cartoon princess who is submerged in modern-day New York City. Deadline hears Rudolph will play a villain in the sequel with Brown and Mays also potentially portraying evil as well.

Adam Shankman is directing for a production start later this spring. Producers are Barry Josephson, Adams, and Barry Sonnenfeld. Brigitte Hales is the most recent writer on the project, whose work got the sequel greenlit after 14 years.

The first movie, which grossed more than $340M WW, was nominated for three Oscars in the Best Song category for Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s tunes “Happy Working Song,” “So Close” and “That’s How You Know.”

Rudolph, who has won praise for her portrayal of VP Kamala Harris on SNL, next will star in a pair of animated films: Disney/Pixar’s Luca and Sony/Netflix’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines.

Brown played Shirley Bennett across 99 episodes of NBC’s comedy series Community. She stars opposite John Stamos on Disney+ series Big Shot.

Mays played Emma Pillsbury for 82 episodes of Glee and starred on Trial & Error and as Charlie Andrews on Heroes.
