Kick boxing is a clown sport. If Verhoeven could be Ngannou standing up, he'd be in the UFC making millions. But he's stuck beating amateurs for 10k fight purses.

Grappling skill has severely tumbled in the UFC with how management explicitly discourages "boringness" (aka using technique from all aspects of martial arts) and encourages sloppy stand-up brawling. Adesanya and Pereira were smart enough to take advantage of this, though not all kickboxers have the same level of success going into MMA.

Nonetheless I don't think the gulf between Ngannou and Verhoeven at kickboxing is quite as big as people think it is. Pure physicality matters a lot in fighting (which gave Ngannou a chance against Fury but not against Joshua, who could match Ngannou's physicality but had way better technique) and don't forget that a washed Overeem beat a Hari who was less than 3 years removed from knocking Verhoeven all over the place. Verhoeven is mostly a decisionator anyway.
