Law [Purdue Pharma's Opioid Lawsuit] Supreme Court Hears Arguments Against $6 Billion Settlement That Grants The Sackler Family Civil Immunity

Purdue needs the death penalty, not a restructuring of debt.

Purdue should be the next Union Bank.
The people who sat on the Board should also bear responsibility. That way the next time, people will stay away from evil organization like this.

Double whammy burger with Monsanto-esques and big pharma. Were a disgusting species with individuals almost 100% being corrupted by power/wealth. Its almost necessity to give up your conscience at those levels of "success".

I consider myself of fairly good moral character but I have no idea if I could resist the pressure of an "elite" echo chamber whose sole purpose is acquisition of power/wealth. Armchair statisticians say Id just join the club. We are viewed as a dollar sign by corporate and thats it.

Que sera...

Any person who has a hand in feeding this poison to another human being needs to be dragged into a public square, drawn and quartered.

Pill pushers with a medical degree should have their medical license suspended on ethic grounds. Facilitating an epidemic is literally the opposite of their "Do No Harm" ethos.

If any of them argue that they only hand them out like candies because didn't know opioids are addictive, then revoke their license on grounds of extreme incompetence.

Street drug dealers get locked up and do football numbers.

Criminally culpable corporations that impact an inordinate amount of ppl get to pay settlements, acquire bankruptcy protection, rebrand and eventually reestablish themselves with the aid of politicians.

Often the same politicians who grandstand as being tough on crime, and who usually end up passing legislation that incarcerate the street dealers to lengthy prison sentences.

Such is the American way.

It is hard to believe isn't it? Its hard to understand how we get things so twisted up.

These fucking pricks are so evil and full of greed. They knew what they were doing when they convinced the medical community they oxy was non addictive, and they rolled in billions of dollars knowing the whole time that their creation was killing people. Now they want to run and hide under bankruptcy. Fuck them. They went from making a few billion to 31 billion per year because of OxyContin alone. Now every state is suing the fuck out of them, and it is still not even touching what they made in one year. WV was and is hit so hard by these fuckers and settled for ten million, and they were among the first(first time wv was ever the first to do anything) and now states are getting $270 million. WV got screwed yet again.

I am big on personal responsibility in such matters; but when they purposely lied about the addictive properties, which they knew from the start and counted and banked on it; they showed what evil fucks they are. So that whole personal responsibility comes back to them. Some of these twat waffles and douche canoes plead guilty for their crimes, but got a slap on the wrist. What needs to happen is these fucks need to be force fed their own drug and then cut off. And do this repeatedly so they can go through withdrawal over and over.

Purdue Pharma owners the Sackler family accused of hiding $1 billion in Swiss accounts

The family that owns OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma used Swiss and other hidden accounts to transfer $1 billion to themselves, New York state's attorney general contends in court papers filed Friday. New York — asking a judge to enforce subpoenas of companies, banks and advisers to Purdue and its owners, the Sackler family — said it has uncovered the previously unknown wire transfers among family members, entities they control and several financial institutions.

The transfers bolster allegations by New York and other states that the Sacklers worked to shield their wealth in recent years because of mounting worries about legal threats.

Scores of those transactions sent millions of dollars to Mortimer D.A. Sackler, a former member of Purdue's board and son of one of its founders, according to the filings.

They point to $20 million shifted from a Purdue parent company to Sackler, who then redirected substantial amounts to shell companies that own family homes in Manhattan and the Hamptons. Another $64 million in transfers to Sackler came from a previously unknown family trust, using a Swiss account, prosecutors said in their filing.

The filing, made in a New York court, follows decisions by that state and others to reject a tentative settlement with Stamford, Connecticut-based Purdue, announced this week, arguing it does not do enough to make amends for the company's and family's alleged roles in flooding U.S. communities with prescription painkillers.

As part of the settlement, Purdue is likely to soon file for bankruptcy protection. But New York and other states have promised they will continue to pursue the Sacklers, alleging that family members drained more than $4 billion from the company over the past dozen years. The family has used a complex chain of companies and trusts to control their holdings, some located in offshore tax havens.

The Sacklers had an estimated net worth of $13 billion as of 2016, making them America's 19th-richest family, according to Forbes magazine.

In its filing Friday, New York told a state judge that the only way it can determine the full extent of those transfers is if all those it has subpoenaed are forced to provide documents detailing their interactions with the Sackler family.

"While the Sacklers continue to lowball victims and skirt a responsible settlement, we refuse to allow the family to misuse the courts in an effort to shield their financial misconduct. The limited number of documents provided to us so far underscore the necessity for compliance with every subpoena," New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

Make them choose, criminal or incompetent.

Bankruptcy??? Life in prison would suit better...

Corporations have far too much protection under current laws.

And in the unlikely event that they are held liable, they can just liquidate the company and start from scratch.

Doesn't seem like there is much incentive for people to run an honest business.

About a decade ago Zhenli Ye Gon was arrested on charges that he was using his pharma company to help facilitate the illicit drug trade of the Sinaloa Cartel, his assets seized, thrown in jail, and extradited back to Mexico to stand trial.

Same shit should be happening to the head of the opioid companies that, through criminal actions, peddled highly addictive pills onto people in vulnerable situations.

You some cold motherfuckers calculating how much money you can make by burying research on how many people your product is going to kill?

You get to declare bankruptcy and start again.

You a 18 year old kid with a half developed brain, takes out some loans you can’t afford to try to get an education like everyone says you supposed to?

Sorry, that gonna be with you for life.

My brother is a neuro surgeon, in his town there's a doc that was until recently, was a drug pusher. She'd prescribe almost anyone opioids or heavy stuff right away.
From top down to the docs and drug reps, punishment should hit them all
