My family moved gradually North over the years, and are now in the Borders area. They live in one of the cheaper towns but the difference in prices in staggering. My parents have a very nice and pretty big bungalow right on the top of a hill looking over a valley. Big piece of land- front garden with a reasonably big drive that could fit five or so cars, back garden probably half a football pitch and even a small mini-forest down one side which must have 20-30 trees. All the rooms on one side of the house have huge windows so they have a great view of the valley. Now it's not cheap... it's probably still close to half a million, but I think even in Yorkshire it would be twice that- the land alone is enough for 3-4 houses with more normal space. And at the other end of the scale, my sister got a nice little terrace house with two beds and a small front yard and slightly bigger back yard for 75k seven or eight years ago, just 5 minutes from the High School and 5-10 minutes from the center of town. That's cheeeeaaap.
Anything that calls you to the Highlands in particular? You're pretty remote up there. The borders also feels very natural and far from everything, but it's 90 minutes to Edinburgh, Newcastle and Carlisle.
