opiate, undertow, and some songs off aenima are the best tool ever put out, in my opinion. i don't know much about the other band.

Mastodon for me. They have a very strong catalog. Troy's voice seems like it's starting to go though. Brann should just assume full time vocals.

Mastodon has 1 album I like, Remission. That's it.

Tool has one of my favorite albums ever, Ænima, along with 4 others that I greatly enjoy. So Tool wins.

Leviathan doesn't have that tasty heaviness, or at least that was my impression when I last listened several years ago

Agreed that it loses some of that. But it's not the progfest they later turned into. And the songwriting is spectacular.

Just listened to it the other day for the first time in years and enjoyed the fuck out of it.

The pre-Remission stuff is heavy, but the songwriting just wasn't there yet.

Agreed. I'm a fan of chaotic hardcore but stuff like Lifesblood isn't quite solid enough.

For me this is the one song pre-Remission that could have made that album.
