International [U.S COVID Vaccine News] CDC to Lift COVID-19 Testing Requirement for international Travelers

My guess is the biggest driver of vaccination rate in rural/hesitant counties is word of mouth. Biden.Cuomo were right after all.

Lol. Did you not see the mortality rates?

Jesus
its a stat that points out texas has twice as many deaths of new york since that taunt. Abbott couldnt help himself though. Not that he cares.

FDA Puts All Hands on Deck to Review Pfizer-BioNTech Covid Vaccine for Full Approval

U.S. drug regulators are taking an “all-hands-on-deck approach” to reviewing Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE’s Covid-19 shot for full approval in an effort to persuade as many as possible to get immunized.

The Food and Drug Adminstration is “identifying additional resources such as personnel and technological resources from across the agency and opportunities to reprioritize other activities, in order to complete our review to help combat this pandemic surge,” agency spokesperson Abby Capobianco said. Acting Director Janet Woodcock has “offered all agency resources to the team to make this happen,” she said.

Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine gained emergency use authorization in December, but many people are waiting for the vaccine to undergo a full review before getting it. The Biden administration is working to vaccinate as many as possible as the highly transmissible delta variant spreads across the U.S., threatening Americans’ return to normal activities.

“We recognize that for some, the FDA approval of Covid-19 vaccines may bring additional confidence and encourage them to get vaccinated,” Capobianco said in the statement. “FDA staff will conduct a thorough review process, while balancing the incredible sense of urgency necessary, both of which are needed to ensure that any vaccine that is authorized or approved meets our rigorous standards for safety, effectiveness, and quality.”

Pfizer submitted the application for full approval in early May. The FDA’s plan to expedite review of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was reported earlier by STAT.

This could be 100% avoidable because studies show you are 25x less likely to be hospitalized if you are vaccinated

This means instead of 10,000 people, you could have 400 people in the hospital.
In the real world, much less than 400 because the infection occurs less 8.3x less frequently in vaxxed individuals
So that is 400/8.3 which is 48 hospitalizations. Even among the 48, itll likely be less because vaxxed individuals still shed less.

But the difference is 10,000 hospitalizations vs 48 hospitalizations with vaccines

2 travelers to Canada who gave false COVID-19 vaccination information each fined almost $20K
By BAILEY SCHULZ | USA TODAY | August 1, 2021

Two travelers trying to enter Toronto from the USA were each fined nearly $20,000 after providing false information related to proof of vaccination and pre-departure coronavirus tests, according to Canadian officials.

The travelers tried to enter during the week of July 18, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a news release. They provided false information and were found noncompliant with the requirement to stay at a government-authorized accommodation and test upon arrival, according to the release.

They each received four fines totaling $19,720, officials said.

Travel restrictions for vaccinated Americans wanting to enter Canada are set to ease in August, but the country continues to enforce strict requirements for entry.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, people registered under the Indian Act and protected persons can enter Canada but must show a negative coronavirus test. Most travelers must quarantine 14 days upon arrival. Dual Canadian citizens can enter with a valid passport or special authorization.

Ignoring quarantine instructions when entering the country can lead to a $5,000 fine each day of noncompliance, according to a statement Friday from the Public Health Agency. People who submit false information on their vaccination status can face a $750,000 fine, up to six months in prison or both.

Starting Aug. 9, Canada is set to reopen its border to fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Travelers must meet pre-entry coronavirus testing requirements and submit a quarantine plan to enter.

Travel from Canada into the USA is severely limited. U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada will remain closed through at least Aug. 21.

About 99.999% of fully vaccinated Americans have not had a severe Covid-19 breakthrough case
By Deidre McPhillips and Christina Maxouris | August 02, 2021
More than 99.99% of people fully vaccinated against Covid-19 have not had a breakthrough case resulting in hospitalization or death, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The data highlights what leading health experts across the country have highlighted for months: Covid-19 vaccines are very effective at preventing serious illness and death from Covid-19 and are the country's best shot at slowing the pandemic down and avoiding further suffering.

The CDC reported 6,587 Covid-19 breakthrough cases as of July 26, including 6,239 hospitalizations and 1,263 deaths. At that time, more than 163 million people in the United States were fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Divide those severe breakthrough cases by the total fully vaccinated population for the result: less than 0.004% of fully vaccinated people had a breakthrough case that led to hospitalization and less than 0.001% of fully vaccinated people died from a breakthrough Covid-19 case.

Most of the breakthrough cases -- about 74% -- occurred among adults 65 or older.

Since May, the CDC has focused on investigating only hospitalized or fatal Covid-19 cases among people who have been fully vaccinated. The agency says the data relies on "passive and voluntary reporting" and is a "snapshot" to "help identify patterns and look for signals among vaccine breakthrough cases."

"To date, no unexpected patterns have been identified in the case demographics or vaccine characteristics among people with reported vaccine breakthrough infections," according to the CDC.

The agency shared a study this week that showed the Delta variant produced similar amounts of virus in vaccinated and unvaccinated people if they get infected. Experts continue to say that vaccination makes it less likely you'll catch Covid-19 in the first place. But for those who do, the findings suggest they could have a similar tendency to spread it as unvaccinated people.

That study also convinced CDC leaders to update the agency's mask guidance on Tuesday, recommending that fully vaccinated people also wear masks indoors when in areas with "substantial" and "high" Covid-19 transmission to prevent further spread of the Delta variant. Guidance for unvaccinated people remains to continue masking until they are fully vaccinated.

Beyond severe cases, an analysis of official state data from the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that breakthrough cases of any kind are also extremely rare.

About half of states report data on Covid-19 breakthrough cases, and in each of those states, less than 1% of fully vaccinated people had a breakthrough infection, ranging from 0.01% in Connecticut to 0.9% in Oklahoma.

The KFF analysis also found that more than 90% of cases -- and more than 95% of hospitalizations and deaths -- have been among unvaccinated people. In most states, more than 98% of cases were among the unvaccinated.

Pace of vaccinations is going up

But experts say those vaccinated, while they may be able to transmit the virus, remain very well protected against getting seriously ill. Amid the latest surge of Covid-19 cases nationwide fueled by the Delta variant, local leaders across the US are reporting that the majority of new infections and hospitalizations are among unvaccinated people.

The Delta variant is now so contagious, one former health official recently warned that people who are not protected -- either through vaccination or previous infection -- will likely get it.

Amid concerns over the rising cases and the dangerous strain, the country has seen a steady rise in the pace of vaccinations in the past three weeks -- and an even sharper increase in states that had been lagging the most, according to a CNN analysis of CDC data.

The seven-day average of new doses administered in the US is now 652,084, up 26% from three weeks ago.

The difference is even more striking in several southern states: Alabama's seven-day average of new doses administered is more than double what it was three weeks ago. The state has the lowest rate of its total population fully vaccinated in the US, at roughly 34%.

Arkansas, with just 36% of its population fully vaccinated, has also seen its average daily rate of doses administered double in the last three weeks.

Louisiana, which had by far the most new Covid-19 cases per capita last week and has only fully vaccinated 37% of its population, saw daily vaccination rates rise 111% compared to three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Missouri, which has been among the hardest-hit states in the latest Covid-19 surge, now has a daily average of new vaccinations 87% higher than three weeks ago.

Roughly 57.5% of the US population has received at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose and about 49.5% is fully vaccinated, CDC data shows.

Delta variant surges across U.S. South; political leaders clamp down again

The U.S. states of Florida and Louisiana were at or near their highest hospitalization numbers of the coronavirus pandemic on Monday, driven by the still-spreading Delta variant, as one doctor warned of the "darkest days" yet.

More than 10,000 patients were hospitalized in Florida as of Sunday, surpassing that state's record. Louisiana was expected to break its record within 24 hours, prompting Governor John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, to order residents to wear masks again indoors.

"These are the darkest days of this pandemic," Dr. Catherine O'Neal, chief medical officer of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, said at a news conference with Edwards. "We are no longer giving adequate care to patients."

O'Neal urged Louisianans to get vaccinated, warning that hospitals were overwhelmed. Many nurses were out sick with the virus, she said, leaving the state with a staffing deficit of 6,000 people.

Hospitalizations in Arkansas are also soaring and could eventually break records. (Graphic on U.S. outbreak)

In California, political leaders in eight San Francisco Bay Area counties reinstated mandatory indoor mask orders in public places as of midnight Tuesday morning.

Governors of New York and New Jersey said transport, jail, hospital and nursing home workers would be required to get vaccinated or submit to regular testing. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said inoculation would be mandatory for the city's more than 11,000 employees.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo urged bars, restaurants and other private businesses to require that customers be vaccinated before they can enter. Cuomo said vaccines could be made mandatory for nursing home workers, teachers and healthcare workers if case numbers do not drop.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy suggested he could clamp down even further on residents and businesses.

The moves represent the latest attempts by policy makers to spur reluctant Americans to get vaccinated as the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus surges nationwide.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has taken the opposite stance. He issued an executive order last week barring schools from requiring face coverings, saying parents should make that decision for their children.

District officials in Broward and Gadsden counties, facing a threat by DeSantis to withhold state funds, said on Monday they were dropping mask mandates this fall, the News Service of Florida reported.

Florida has one of the worst outbreaks in the nation and about one-quarter of the country's hospitalized COVID patients, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Mary Mayhew, head of Florida's hospital association, said the latest surge sent hospitalizations rising to 10,000 from 2,000 in less than 30 days, although deaths have remained well below peak numbers.

"It is a much younger age group that is getting hospitalized," Mayhew said. "For the last year, so many heard repeatedly that COVID had the greatest risk for our elderly, for individuals with serious underlying conditions, but the Delta variant is clearly a significant risk for younger people."

There are like 5 megathreads and I’m not sure which is appropriate...

My work is mandating the vaccine for a return to office. I work in HR and I’ve been FLOODED with messages of people threatening to quit, terrified of losing their jobs and complete angry at the decision.

The worst part is, we still have no official guidance on what to do with the unvaccinated. We can’t afford to lose this many people.

Can the unvaccinated do their job remotely? If they can, I'd let them stay home and work. Management will need to decide if they are going to look for replacements.

That’s my position as well, but I’m just a mid level manager. They are forcing some business units to return to office. what’s in the air is what happens to those who are unvaccinated and also forced to go back to the office
