If BJ Penn had Max’s cardio, would he have defended his title more at LW? And won more at WW?

Bj Penn was a gifted human being , cardio was not one of those gift but hey you can’t have everything.
This is like saying what if Max learned JiuJitsu at the same super human rate that Bj did

If Mike Tyson trained takedown defense for 6 months, would he be unbeatable?

BJ had good cardio in a couple of fights and looked pretty good.

It wasn’t really Frankie’s cardio that beat BJ. Even if BJ had better cardio, Frankie’s speed and style were always going to give him fits. He bounced around and BJ couldn’t catch him. BJ didn’t focus on taking him down and even if he had, probably wouldn’t be able to do it. And BJ didn’t adjust at all for the second fight.

BJ had an extremely low fight IQ. He was very skilled at BJJ and had a good jab, and usually didn’t need to think beyond that. Some guys he just overwhelmed with his talent, like Sherk, Florian and Diego Sanchez, but when he wasn’t better everywhere he lost.

He almost never attempted take someone down to use his BJJ (except for the Fitch fight), and didn’t prepare for specific opponents. His motto was “just scrap” - he didn’t believe in real preparation.

It was his brother in his corner giving advice in the second fight with GSP. What had he done other than being BJ’s brother to get that job?

If BJ was a smarter fighter he would probably never have fought Machida. He would have spent a lot less time at Welterweight. Would have picked his matchups more carefully.

His third fight against Frankie where he fought on his tip toes was really bizarre. He just didn’t have a great mind

cardio is one of those things that you can train without much of a brain or talent imo. BJ could of had Max's cardio if he worked for it.
Cardio is still genetic. It's entirely possible that BJ would never have Max's cardio.

In fact, if what you were saying is true then there would be nothing special about Max's cardio as everyone with work effort would have it.

Anyway, BJ Penn's weakness was not really cardio. While he wasn't the most disciplined he did not lose that many fights due to conditioning.

BJ Penn was grinded out by GSP who was a lot bigger. It was his most high profile fight and that's really where most of the imagery of Penn being gassed comes from. No one around his size could do that to him. BJ Penn did not really have "major weaknesses" unless we are nit picking.

He had it when he was working with the Marinovich brothers but lasted only 2 fights
