Movies What is your opinion of Mark Wahlberg as an actor?

he comes off as a wigger douchebag in most of his movies

He's a really amazing thespian. Here is one of my favorite things Mark has done. His acting when he yelled racist stuff at that Asian guy and popped his eyeball was also really high level stuff. Then, when he acted like he was sorry so he could get his criminal record expunged, so he could run for public office, that was pretty neat acting as well.

He kisses like a dehydrated dog drinks but I've lol'd from time to time.

how could boogie nights be out of his comfort zone when it was like his second really big movie. FEAR being his real first big movie role.

He didn’t make enough movies to be out of a comfort zone at the time.

Well, if you want to nitpick some wording...

The "comfort zone" is within his acting ability as a whole, and not necessarily the movies he's been cast in. In short, he has limited range and works within it.

You only know that now after the fact. He’s had an entire career that has shaped that thinking.

there are other actors who were only okay starting out but got much better over time.

He's not a 1-dimensional actor, but his roles are too related to be a 3-dimensional actor.

So, guess that means he's 2-dimensional, though it'd be closer to say he's 1.5-dimensional.

can't remember a movie where he didn't play himself. not much of an actor, but i dont mind him in movies.

He's not charismatic and seems to do really well only when playing a role that fit him, otherwise he's not credible

I was aware of his racist assault on the Vietnamese American but didn't know of the racist stuff against the Black kids. Amazing isn't it, that he can get away with all that in today's 'woke' / 'cancel culture' world. Dude is super priviledged to be able to shug it off.
I doubt luck have anything to do with it, his past is too well known and he's even the portrait of what woke people declared war to

More likely he have the right connections to not be touched, so while the small folk can still talk about what a pos he is on teh internet, the actual woke propaganda machine play blind on him

I have a korean friend who acted alongside him as a dead body. My friend is pretty good and after the scene, Wahlberg started to walk off the set, but he turned around and yelled "Hey Asian guy, are you ok over there? You scared the shit out of me, you're a real stiff!"

I probably told the story wrong but it was something like that.

Middle of the road actor with nothing that stands out to define him as an actor. He has the connects though, that's why he makes big movies.

Terrorizing black children and severely beating a man unconscious with a big stick is far worse than just some mere stupid shit. We all did stupid shit when we were young like minor vandalism and petty theft, but the majority of us didn't aggressively harass people over the color of their skin and violently assault people with weapons.

I understand even the worst scumbag can be redeemed, but Wahlberg barely got a slap on the wrist given the severity of his crimes.

Oh well then do the American national sport and start a cancellation campaign. You will feel like s good american afterwards.

He sucks. He's always the least talented actor in every movie he's been in and makes movies worse with his mere presence. But, he's a fit good looking white dude and probably a hard worker which goes a long way for talentless actors like him.

Haha! I am not big fan of the twitter mobs cancelling people. I don't even have a twitter account. I don't know. Maybe Wahlberg has paid for his crimes against humanity in ways unknown to the public. Maybe he will pay for it when his life is over. I don't know how it all works in the grand scheme of things.

I'm guessing he takes roles that are similar to how he really is in real life.

"crimes against humanity"?
Yes sure what he did sucks but do you know how fucking young 15YO is? Seriously at 15 YO I was such a worthless little piece of shit that all I should have been good at is getting the shit beaten out of me by my father, who unfortunately for me, did not believe in child beating.

I think it is really questionable to give shit to a man pushing 50 for shit he did as a teen. Unless we are talking about really bad shit like murder or rape, maybe. But being a violent, racist little shit is none of that.

i like him. i enjoy most of his movies.

the lovely bones was fucking terrible though.

I'd say he's a 6.5, not a lot of range but is reliable and has done some great films.

I've never overly liked the characters he plays or the movies he is in. No roles have been really impressive.

Plus I get annoyed knowing some of the idiotic things he has said and done and can't get it out of my craw.

He’s a bad actor.

In fact his acting is so bad it’s one of the reasons Boogie Nights was so great. If you took him out of that role and added a well trained actor the movie wouldn’t have had the same appeal. His badness added to the character.
That's an interesting take that I'd never thought of before. I always thought it was one of his best roles. There's only four in his career that standout to me. Boogie Nights, Fear, The Fighter and The Departed. FWIW, I noticed that John C. Reilly acted very similar to him in the movie, which I'm sure was by design. I always thought it was good acting from both of them, and really just a great ensemble cast.

Maybe Paul Thomas Anderson just gave really good direction to the actors in that film because he seemed to pull really great performances out of EVERYBODY. Even the few actual porn stars that he hired for speaking roles (Little Bill's Wife and the Colonel's Lady Friend). And Burt Reynolds never struck me as a great actor, but he gave the performance of his career in Boogie Nights. But yeah, Marky Mark isn't consistently great like some of the actors in the movie (Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Alfred Molina, Thomas Jane, etc.)
