You have been fired?
Got fired after 27 years for smoking cigs in an unauthorized area of the plant.
Actually, they put a camera up, and I got recorded smoking 3 times. Too cold to smoke outside, so I thought I'd be slick. Didn't work.
Union had a 3rd step grievance, and the company refused to budge.

Also....it will be near impossible to find another good job at my age. (plus trying to explain to a prospective employer I was fired after 27 years.

Really fucking me up.

No pity party here, but really considering ending it all.

I hurt real bad. Let down my wife.

Don't tell her and see how long you can go until she finds out that you "leaving for work" is just you going to dunkin donuts and driving back home after she's gone.

You're union? Just tell her you got fired for working too hard. Lazy pricks.

In all honesty, I'm sure your union will hook you up with another job soon.

Don't be this guy.

Good luck, bud. Just tell her.

Wtf no warning?

After 27 years you'd think theyd give you a warning first.

Lie and say you had a disagreement with the boss and you got into a heated argument. That’s what caused the termination.

Also, if you have a good skill set and can keep from smoking inside......why can't you find another job? It might not be as good of a job, but maybe something more enjoyable, or a better commute, etc......

I'm really sorry to hear that. Trust me, your wife wants you alive and in her life.

If the person is a poor employee, a safety violation like this is a great way to get them out when you otherwise can't. It's difficult to fire a union employee based off poor performance alone.

Happened to me. Told her the company let me go (but I got a good severance package).
It was still very hard. Not an easy experience, but I came away with a better job, better hours, more money. In the end, I'm glad it happened. but always better when you can go out on your own terms.
Good luck to you.

So they caught you 3 times, then just canned you without warning you after times 1 and 2? That sounds ghey. Just tell your wife you were defending her honor around the fellas. Weirdly enough, I found out a client of mine gives their employees a monthly $50 stipend for tobacco purchase.

I've been fired once before. It was my fault though for being a retard. Luckily it was a job I was already considering leaving. Honestly I would just come out and tell her, nothing good comes from hiding anything. Take a shitty temporary job to keep some sort of income, and use the pain as motivation to hunt down a new position.

For shame, TS. For shame.

All that over a cigarette...

Was it worth it, TS?

I don't think the reason for your termination is that big of a deal, but if you insist you could tell her you were fired for making a mistake on the assembly line (or whatever it is you do), but that they were still willing to give you a good reference.

In the meantime, drive uber/lyft or even better, find a logistic company to work for and deliver packages for amazon.

Hang in there man. On the grand scale of things, this isn't that bad.

they fired you for smoking after 27 fucking years of service to the company? god damn they are assholes, if your wife is a trooper she'll understand, if she doesnt, well you know she aint special

They recorded you three times, but you were only confronted about it once?

Were there signs up for the camera? Workplaces cant place cameras inside without a sign. At least in the US. Check with a lawyer if there were no signs.
