Your unpopular opinions on music

I mean... there are a lot of metrics of skill for drums. Probably moreso than most instruments, seeing as you have four limbs that you can train to use in desynchronized fashion. Speed isn't the end all for drumming. Jazz drummers that can hold different patterns with every limb are far more impressive than someone who can play fast on a double pedal.

Agreed. In terms of metal drumming I'm more into like BRann Dailor from Mastodon than Jordison. Or even a guy like Jimmy Chamberlain from the Pumpkins I think would be great in the context of a metal band.

Like I said, my memory of Jordison was some monstrously fast and complex drummer, but I never gave him a look after I moved past that phase. Looking back now, I could have easily played any Slipknot song without any sort of thought. Not at the moment, as it's been years. But it's all so simple and not nearly as fast as I remember.

Whats your guy's opinions on Lars Ulrich?

People always shit on him for how sloppy he is and all that but as a guy who can only play a couple of standard rock beats on the drums, I think his drumming sounds really good. Fits about as perfectly in a band as any drummer I've heard and has a handful of his own "hooks".

I'm not very knowledgeable about bass but man, finger picking tech death songs at 300bpm is so God damn impressive.

Definitely. It takes so much practice to play that fast and not sound like shit. Truly skilled.

Big yikes.

Lars has a really negative impact on Metallica's sound, especially early on. Thrash calls for some high velocity contemporary drumming, but the dude mostly plays sped-up AC/DC style patterns. One of my biggest complaints about Metallica in any era of their music is how it always sounds like a child is recording drums for them. Listen to other thrash bands at the time, and it's hard to miss. It's not like they invented thrash. They knew where they needed to be and the drums just... sucked.

My opinion is what he plays works for the songs and allows the guitars and vocals to shine and the melodies to stand out. With more complex drumming I don't think Metallica would have gotten as famous as they did. People like 4 on the floor, and the metal equivalent of that is Metallica.

In terms of proficiency on the instrument he's not very good.

They spend a lot of time in the studio to get those drum tracks as clean as they are. Because when I hear them play live, it doesn't sound like he has very solid rhythm or feel. He's like somebody who wanted to play drums super bad and had the ambition and means to make it happen but really has very little natural ability on the instrument.

@BEER

Since you are a drummer it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on some not so well know drummers that are highly praised in their scene.

Lord Marco (Neurogenic, Six Feet Under, Rings of Saturn, etc)

Eihar(Cerebral Effusion)

Lile Gruber(Defeated Sanity)

I think he sounds great (on the albums) even though most drummers shit on him. Hard hitting, memorable beats that worked perfectly in most the songs. One, Sad But True, Fuel etc all have awesome beats in them that are more memorable to the general public than anything the more "technical" trash drummers ever came up with. The most technical players in the world usually lack creativity so they get by on the technical aspect of it. Lars definitely lacks in the technical aspect but he had a knack for playing along pretty well in most their songs to help the best part of the songs come forward.

It is a shame that he sucks live because it's kind of like when you go see a live band and you realize the singer is all studio made and sounds about as good as the average person singing in the car.

I laughed at Eihar doing "pussy blasts" (quarter notes on cymbal and eighth notes on snare/bass), but they're all really good. Very very tight from a technical standpoint.

I hate Rings of Saturn, but drumming for them requires an entirely new gear.

It's hard to say whether or not he "added" to the band's sound in hindsight but I'm pretty convinced that there were a ton of drummers who would have sounded better on any given album. He was their weakest link, by a long shot. They still got on the list of "thrash bands that popularized the genre while never truly representing it" so fuck it.

Lol

Same with Rings of Saturn. Don't listen to them but they're undeniably proficient in their instruments.

They had one good album, but it feels like they tripped and fell into that album rather than actually being able to consistently write good songs.

1. Axl Rose is the greatest front man alive

2. Michael Jackson never molested kids, and even if he did, I kinda don't care.

3. Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Beyonce have never been hot.

4. 80's New wave birthed some of the greatest songs in history

1980s Madonna can catch that d.

JLo as well.

And Beyoncé.

Nirvana ruined music for a generation and brought about far to many awful grunge bands.

The Rick Vito & Billy Burnette era of Fleetwood Mac was hot garbage.
As talented as those two may be ( especially Vito ), the music that they made with Mac was awful, soulless crap. Mac without Lindsay Buckingham is trash. Everything that they do without him since he joined in '75 sounds like a really good cover band. Close but far from authentic. Buckingham's guitars are as integral to the mix as Fleetwood's drums & McVie's bass. And, while his vocals aren't spectacular there's a raw intensity to them that no one else can match.
And, without the dynamic between Buckingham & Nicks the band's music just sounds stale & listless.
The only song that the band did without Buckingham that was even a minor hit was "As Long As You Follow" back in '88 but IMO that sounds more of a Christine McVie solo country song rather than a Fleetwood Mac song. But, that said, it's the only non-Buckingham Mac song that I'll listen to. Even though it's pretty weak sauce.

Paul McCartney is the greatest songwriter in the history of modern music and the single greatest influence in at least the last 150 years. That being said, I truly love only a handful of his songs and think the other 95% totally sucks ass and can't even listen to them.

Half of the 80s music played on the radio and on XM today was ridiculed when it first came out and was almost never played on the radio. It only played on MTV because people liked the videos and often watched with the sound muted.

Rush is probably the most successful 3-man rock group ever. It's made up of 3 great artists who made the worst fucking music ever. Triumph was much better.

I have a lot... at the top of my mind:

Yngwie Malmsteen is a mediocre guitar player. He plays fast but 90% of his solos are just basic scales, triads and arpeggios. Guys like Paul Gilbert, Vai, Satriani, etc. could play his music with their eyes closed but they chose to do actual music.

Re-Load from Metallica is one of their best albums

Mercyful Fate is one of the best metal bands ever. The only thing that kept them from mopping the floor with lesser bands (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden) it was Kings Diamonds voice which is hard to digest.

LP is one of the most underrated pop artists ever despite being well known.

Rap music today sucks except for a few independent artists in the east coast (mostly Vinnie Paz and associates). Lamar, Drake, Kanye West... all those guys are just terrible.

Argentina has some of the best bands ever.

Alejandro Sanz is a better musicians than 99% of artist out there.

Nirvana sucks.

I got a few.

Beatles and Tool suck.
Biggie and Tupac both sucked (with the exception of a few songs between both).
East coast rap > west coast rap (back in the late 80's to mid 90's).
Testament, not Anthrax, should be part of the Big 4.
