That put ultimate fighting on the map more imo than if a random american big man did it which more people expected regardless if he was using bjj or not. Wouldn't have stood out as much.

Big John did not seem to know what an armbar was back then. Guys were tapping to submissions by Royce and Big John was just looking at the guys in pain all clueless. Both Royce and Ken would have played with him!

You know he was a ref because he had been training with the Gracies, as they had been working with cops, for a good while? I forget how long, but he was mid level by then, and he definitely understood submissions. He wanted to compete and they wouldn't let him.

Student of Gracies could very well mean white belt. Had he even entered grappling tournaments? What's his record there?

Maybe he could've beaten someone in UFC 1 but I think they are just as likely to beat him. Shamrock knew the submission game and was one of the only dudes that was conditioned to last more than 30 seconds. I think he would be destroy big john.

Then dangerous guys with experience fighting could also catch him. Gordeau, Smith, hell even rozier was a former kickboxer which made him way more experienced in a fight than big John.

He might have choked these dudes out but I think his odds vs each are below 50 percent

I think John McCarthy's input as a referee helped legitimize the UFC which was critical to its overall success so if he had been a fighter I do not think the UFC would have ever been as mainstream as it is today. I also think he would have won the tournament even easier than Royce.
