Microsoft acquires Zenimax Entertainment for $7.5 billion

An update on the deal:

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators will decide by March 5 whether to clear Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the U.S. tech giant’s biggest gaming acquisition to better compete with Sony Corp’s PlayStation.

Microsoft requested European Commission approval for the deal on Jan. 29, a filing on the EU executive’s website showed.

The EU competition enforcer can clear the deal with or without concessions during its preliminary review or it can open a full-scale investigation if it has serious concerns.

ZeniMax, parent company of Bethesda Softworks, has developed hits including Fallout and Doom. The gaming industry has soared, boosted by demand from users stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mergers: Commission clears acquisition of ZeniMax by Microsoft

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of ZeniMax Media Inc. by Microsoft Corporation, both of the U.S. ZeniMax is a company that develops and publishes games for personal computers (‘PCs'), gaming consoles, and mobile devices. Microsoft is a global technology company, which develops, publishes, and distributes games for PCs, consoles, and mobile devices. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns, given the combined entity's limited market position upstream and the presence of strong downstream competitors in the distribution of video games. The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure. More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.10001. No clarification or announcement from Microsoft .. so don't be celebrating yet. lol

There's a event on Thursday.
If they announce full exclusivity for every Bethesda IP, it would be a stark difference from their messaging so far. Nothing is adding up to that but they could surprise everyone.

Either way, I’m equipped to play Bethesda titles wherever they release so if that is the case I’m good.

They might not be able to do full exclusive for any game that was in active development before the the purchase. But you are correct while vague they have made it seem not exclusive.

Yea doesn't sound like everything will be exclusive. Either way I'll be getting it all on PC through Gamepass anyways so I could care less what they do. Unless it's a multiplayer game then I might go PS5 if that's an option.

I picked up a Series X in January to go with my PS5 I got in November, so if their games don’t release on PS5 going forward I don’t care, I’m set either way.

Yeah, same. I’ve got Game Pass and my laptop coming here soon so I’m set regardless.

so yeah, this is happening.

i think it's comical that this went through fairly quickly, despite microsoft being in everyone's antitrust crosshairs (and with the dems now talking about breaking up google and microsoft)... and the xlnx/amd deal, which seemed like a fast-tracked slam dunk, is moving at a snail's pace.

the whole video game landscape seems weird right now, from a software/hardware perspective. to me, at least. it's all so ironic.

(tons of wafers went to the consoles... which still don't really have current gen games [like, what?] making the gpu supply crazy tight, so PC gamers are fucked, despite being PC and constantly having new games... imo, mistakes were made. lots of them... it seems like they rushed the consoles just to have new consoles, but this seems like the most sparse launches since the ps2. so it seems like everyone's basically fucked, and it would have been easily avoidable if consoles were just delayed 1 year or whatever. which would result in faster/beefier consoles, anyway, not that this was the problem...)

@Dizzy

I would presume starfield will be exclusive going by this statement..

“Will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.”

Yep, some new titles/IP’s will be exclusive, others will still be released multiplat. Their message has remained steady.

Can we get some info on Starfield now?
